Thank you for the various thoughts.

I certainly wasn't casting any criticism!

As I said, I'll have to do some more investigating.  Possibly my great grandfather's family took a trip to Brighton - they don't appear to have been struggling money-wise, but would they have gone there from Blackburn as opposed to Blackpool for what I presume is a seaside holiday?  Maybe there's a girl cousin to one of my great grandparents lurking around who I haven't discovered yet?

Hmm...this poses a problem.  I'm assuming the photo is that of a girl.  I thought it might have been Edith, who was born in 1880, and is the only one I know of in the family born around that time.  Her husband was born in 1876 (but surely this isn't a boy??) and he had a sister born in 1878 but she died in 1880. Also, that side of the family lived in Blackburn, whereas Edith's lived in Hampshire.  The link provided by HandyPandy has the back of a carte de viste the same as this one which says it is from around 1882, so I thought I was on the right track with it being Edith.

This child is definitely someone from the family.  We have a photo of my mother taken at about the same age and she is the spitting image right down to the hairstyle (when I first saw this old photo I thought it was my mother in dress up!), and photos of my sister at the same age are also identical.  Some more investigating to do, I think.

Could you please date this photo, and also the approximate age of the child.  I think it is possibly a photo of my great grandmother Edith Stirrup (nee Stent).  I've also included a copy of the details from the back.

Many thanks,
Cathryn

Thank you for that other restoration.
Carol - I hadn't realised there was a photographer's name - it's not visible on the photo itself, although I think when rubbing a finger gently in that area there is some slight embossing that can be felt.  I'll have to see if I can enhance it any further and work out who it was.

Thank you for the replies, and especially for the clean up!

It is a postcard but is fairly plain on the back - if you are looking at it in landscape format, it says "POST CARD" at the top, there is a thin line going down the middle and on the left it has "CORRESPONDENCE" and on the right "ADDRESS".  It doesn't look as though anything was ever written on it.

Going on the dating and age range given it's definitely not my great great grandmother but most likely my great grandmother Edith Mabel who was born in 1880.

It would be appreciated if I could get an approximate date for this photo, and maybe also the age of the lady, who I believe is either my great or great great grandmother.

Beeonthebay - I wasn't criticising the transcribers - far from it!  More my computer skills (or lack thereof) and possibly my computer - eg I'd select a county such as Somerset and no places would come up in the next box, and when I hit the search button it would just keep spinning without giving any results or even saying there were no matches.

I'm now starting down Mary's path (thank you for the details about her parents' marriage) which I had been stuck on for a while.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!  ;D

I'd say that baptism for Mary in January 1797 is the one I've been searching for.  And the entry on FreeReg also clears up that she was a spinster when she married.

I've looked at FreeReg in the past but always had great difficulty getting any results when I entered search details.  For whatever reason, now it seems to be working for me - who knows what I was doing wrong before!
