Devon Lookup Requests / Re: 1831 ? census lookup. Powlesland

Caz,

Thanks for messages>

In reply:-

I think that Norman Bowden is the son of Ellen c1891 Powlesland.
I met her many years ago as an old lady. She was known as Nellie and was married to Albert Bowden: they lived at Sticklepath nr. Okehampton.

A children we often used to visit various people in Sticklepath which is where
Elizabeth Powlesland c. 1860 lived with her husband John Cooper.

My grandmother Harriet Powlesland's dau. Ellen Curtis was brought up by Elizabeth and John Cooper - I have photographs.

Nellie Harris [nee Powlesland ] who I have previously referred to also lived in Sticklepath.

With regard to the box, I got it thro' my mother: I suspect that it was Clifford J
Powlesland because of the Okehampton [Sticklepath] connection: as yet I have no proof, but when I here from Norman Bowden perhaps he will be able to confirm the connections and give me details of Nellie Harris.

With regard to youe query of 28th November [sorry for the delay !!] Mary and George Lethbridge were the witnesses at Harriets Marriage to William Curtis  on 1st July 1873 at the church of St. Mary Arches in Exeter.

This m. cert refers to harriet as 24 and William as 21.

I have not been able to confirm his birth date, but he died on 11th May 1891 at Black Torrington aged 38 - I cannot find his birth at all around 1852 - 53 but will keep trying.

Caz,

Sorry not to have been in touch for so long - I'm afraid work gets in the way !!

not much Powlesland news

I have fond out that the NELLIE HARRIS that I referred to was nee Powlesland,  and that she was my grandmother's cousin.

I met her as an elderly lady in the '60s , she lived in Sticklepath.

My g. m. was Ellen Curtis nee Powlesland the dau. of Harriet P.

Any thoughts ?

I am trying to contact Nellie Harris' dau. called Maureen Silliphant
who I last heard lived in Leicestershire.

I have also written to Norman Bowden, Samuel Powlesaland's grandson;
if I get any news I will let you know.

Regards,

David

Sorry

Henry Stokes was b in Stow Maries: at the 1861 census he lived in Burleigh Vilage, Purleigh.

He was married to Elizabeth nee Harrington and had three children

Caroline b 1845 ?
Lucy Hannah b 1849
Daniel Robert b 1853

On the 1861 census there is no sign of wife Elizabeth or Caroline.
Caroline was married in 1872

I think that Henry's parents were John b 1796 and Elizabeth b 1793 but am not certain.

I've had a chance to check the info.

Yes we are looking at the same family.

I had mis-read George and Susanna's m cert - it is 1843.

My G grand parents were Harriet nee Powlesland and William Curtis

My grandmother [ellen curtis] was brought up by her aunt Elizabeth nee Powlesland and John Cooper in Sticklepath - [I have photos of them]

Samuel Powlesland married Elizabeth, and I new their daughter Nellie who married Albert Bowden - they also lived in Sticklepath.

Their son Norman Bowden is still alive and I am in touch with him.

I also remeber Nellie Harris who also lived in Sticklpath, but do not know exactly where she fits in, other than that she was a cousin of my grandmother.

With regard to my own family - William Curtis and Harriet nee Powlesland had five children - who were all born at Black Torrington.
William Curtis was a coachman for the local doctorbut died aged 38. On his death the family was dispersed.

The children were:-

Mary Matilda Curtis b1873  d 1933
Richard Curtis b 1874
Clara Anne Curtis b 1875 d 1938
Ellen Curtis b 1883   d. 1957
John Curtis b 1885  d 1965

On William's death, Harriet and the eldest child Mary went to Exeter to live with Harriet's elder sister Mary [who was married to..... Hutchins.
RIchard and Clara went to Bideford to live with Luxtons
Ellen and John went to Sticklpath to live with harriets younger sister Elizabeth [and John] Cooper.

I do have further info. if you are interested.

David
