Family History Beginners Board / Update

Basically I want to trace my father's parents so I can obtain his birth certificate so I can apply for an Irish passport as my mum is convinced he is Irish, but he lived in Liverpool for a while before moving down to East Devon when I came on the scene.

I've hit a brick wall as although I have his date of birth, I can't even find any details of him being born, and neither can the friend who was trying to help with this.

I have the marriage certificate, and my brother's birth certificate which has some details on but I'm really stuck here.

I have done all the searches I can and end up going round and round in circles as I have so little information, and I understand that a lot of Irish records were destroyed.

I'm now the very proud holder of an Irish passport.  :)

Since this search, my mum has passed away, but I met with her younger brother from New Zealand last week and he brought me over some cherished b&w photo's of my mum and dad with myself and my brother from all those years ago (the only ones I have of us with him)

I'd like to thank everyone who helped me in my quest, without this forum I wouldn't have got as far as I have - THANK YOU

Thanks for your feedback Aghadowey.
After 5 searches, it asks you to subscribe for a fee as well which is fine if the info is informative/helpful.

I have been looking at all the documents I've collected so far, and this one has confused me - can you shine any light on it please.

William Hogg b. 19th Sept 1896 son of William Hogg and Jane Hogg nee Culley

I thought Jane Culley married George Homes Hogg 1886 except the name is spelt Cully on the marriage certificate

It was just that he had William Hogg b. 1867 son of James Hogg and Jane McCully, married to Jane Unknown, down as being the father to my dad's dad - William Hogg b. 1896 d. 1945

The only Walter S Hogg I can find b.1904 was born to the maiden name Larmour not Culley? I can't find any other Walter.

Was the 'someone who did my tree' a relative? or were the details used to start with taken from family stories?
Neither, he was trying to help me solve the puzzle of my dad, I showed him all the info that had been found for me here, and he transferred it over onto a PDF file.
