Thanks Jen,

I looked at the Sunderland ward site too and saw the Hawkins listing (not my Mary Ann...She died in New York City in 1946), but I have bookmarked it to check again later.
Thanks for the help.

Durham Lookup Requests / Bishopwearmouth Cemetery -- Hawkins family
« on: Saturday 27 June 09 18:17 BST (UK)  »
Hi there,

I am looking for the inscription (or if possible a photo) of the gravestone of my great great grandmother, Sarah Ann (Cummings) Hawkins.  According to Durham Records online, Sarah died about 31 May 1888 at the age of 32 (the date is from the record, but I'm not sure if its a death date or a burial date) and is buried in Bishopwearmouth Cemetery. The Record # is 456315.2.

She left at least 5 children -- my great grandmother Mary Anne was #3 --  (there was possibly  6th child, there is a baby in a photo we can't place -- maybe Sarah died in childbirth and the baby died soon afterward???) and her husband William Hawkins (a papermaker) remarried in Dec. 1888 to Madeline (Ormston) Laws (it was her 2nd marriage too, she had 2 children from her previous marriage).  William Hawkins (senior, he and Madeline had a William b. ca 1891) died about 1917 and Madeline died about 1929.  I'm not sure if they are buried in Bishopwearmoth Cemetery near Sarah or not (but if they are, I'd love those inscriptions as well).

Any help I could get would be greatly appreciated.
Sincerely,
Lara G.

Thanks Stuart.  :)  I checked out your site (wow that's a lot of work!!)  I'll check out the 1851 Kildrummy census for John (hopefully he's the same one).
Since Anne was from Mortlach, would she possibly been buried there (her parents were still living in 1841 and in Mortlach, but again, I don't know where they are buried)?  This side of my family has been a "brick wall" for too long.
Thanks again,
Lara

I am researching the family of Peter GRANT and Anne McPHERSON.  According to the 1841 census, Peter was living at Ardluie with 2 of his daughters (Elizabeth and Jean), and there is no mention of Anne (she probably had died by then).  Peter was listed as the Blacksmith.  By 1851, ther is no mention of Peter.

I am descended from Peter and Anne son, John (I can't find a registration of his birth, but he was born between 1828 and 1832, I've seen dates within that range).  According to John's marriage certificate, his parents were both deceased by the time of the marriage (in Kincardine O'Neil, Aberdeenshire) in January 1859.

I found a satellite view of the Ardluie/Balymulloch area of Lower Cabrach, and am not sure if there were several dwellings at the site (it looks like a large farm now). All that is left of Balymulloch are the stone walls on 2 buildings.

Any idea where the family might be buried (they aren't in the Upper Cabrach churchyard, and I'm not sure where else they might be)?  Any help with the family would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

Hi,

My Milnes are from Elizabeth Milne (b. 1828 d.1913-- Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire).  Her parents are James Milne (b. ca. 1796) and Mary Ann Matheson (b.ca. 1799 d. after 1881).  I have their marriage intention paper from 1817.  That's all the information I have at the moment, but am still working on it.  Any of these names sound familiar?

Thanks so much!  I had the marriage record, but didn't think that it was the same couple (I'm not sure where Daviot is compared to Kincardine O'Neil).

Hi Joanne,

That certainly sounds like my family.  Would an 8 or 9 year old be "Farmed out" to another family at that age at that time?  If Jean is older than John, maybe Ann died while having him (just a thought).

Do you know if there would be death records in the OPR for Ann and Peter?  I plan of going on ScotlandsPeople soon (after Christmas), but can't remember if the OPR's had death records (I last was at the GRO in Edinburgh 5 years ago).

Thanks so much for your help ( I see that the "wall" has cracks in it now).
Happy Holidays!
Sincerely,
Lara

Hi Heywood,

Thank you so much!!  I'll send for the younger kids birth certificates.  I didn't know about the Delia/Bridgit switch (everything I have lists her as Delia) but it could be possible.

Thanks again for your help!!

Mayo / Joyce Family
« on: Saturday 17 December 05 16:52 GMT (UK)  »
I am searching for my Great Grandfather, PATRICK JAMES JOYCE's, family and according to "family tradition" he came from Co. Mayo.  My grandma didn't know the exact town though.  I have found that he was born in either 1875 or 1877 (his death cert has b. 1877, his marriage record and immigration records have 1875) to Michael Joyce and Margaret (last name unknown -- can't read it on the death record).  He went with his family (parents and brother Martin and sisters Delia and Kate) to Hebburn, Tyne and Wear, England sometime after 1885, where he met and married my Great Grandmother, Maryann Hawkins in 1901.  They all immigrated to New York City by 1903.  He died in 1923 in New York City.

According to the Ellis Island records, Michael was born ca. 1843, Martin was born ca. 1885, and Delia was born ca. 1883.  Kate and Margaret came over prior to the rest of the family and I don't have dates for them.

Any help I could get on this would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks so much.
