Thanks so much for your help, I will definitely be using the will site for other ancestors. It's great to get good advice and help on how to pad out the bare bones of names and numbers.

Oh yes apologies, I missed that. Would a gentleman have been what we would think of as upper class/ wealthy or does it have some other meaning? I'm guessing from all his marriages that he was either handsome or wealthy!

Thank you all for your help. It certainly explains the marriages. Could anyone advise though if it would be usual to have a will in the late 1800's?

I couldn't find him in 1841 but in 1851 he was living at 3 peat place, whitehaven, listed as ships carpenter, married to Sarah and 2 daughters Mary age 12 and Elizabeth age 17. Hope that helps.

I am looking for some marriages for Joseph Irven b1807 whitehaven. I have found him in 1851 with Sarah, she died in 1857 and it looks like he married Ann. Any further information would be great. Thanks
