Dorset Lookup Requests / Re: Identifying a Bournemouth building
« on: Tuesday 07 May 13 14:16 BST (UK)  »
Austin Reed's were in the building on the corner of Westover Road in that building - further along used to be a well known furrier - Fox's. Yet further along used to be Forte's Cafe/Restaurant. Not sure how that will help.

Hi Steve.
Thank you for that re the certificate. If you do find anything give me a shout!
I'll give you some details that I have on Florence to begin with - and I have a question about Isabel Sarah.

As I said Florence was in the Dorchester Workhouse in the 1911 census. She had a base born dau named Dorothy Jessie D. MITCHELL on 16 Jul 1911 (who eventually dieD on 26th June 1992.) Then Florence married Percival MOORE in the Sep Qtr 1917 in the Blandford Region, and then had two children - Nora V MOORE (b Sep Qtr 1918 Blandford Region) and Waler C O MOORE b 15 Aug 1920.

Dorothy Jessie married Charles HARDY (which is where my relationship comes in - Charles was my 1st cousin once removed) on 14 Jul 1934 and they went on to have four children. (Not sure how many details of the family you would like!)

Re Isabel Sarah - I have her as one of 10 children to Henry James and Elizabeth MITCHELL - (with one child extra from Elizabeth from unknown partner). I have Isabel only down as Sarah, and as being born abt 1892 in Melcombe Bingham but no details on her marriage etc.

If you want any other information that I may have just let me know - might be easier if I send you a report of the details I have on Henry and his descendants - let me know.

Cheers, Marion

Hi Steve, Good to hear from you again - that's the nature of the beast - we write when we find!
There can't be too many Henry Mitchells that died in 1944 in Dorchester in Damers. We know he was in the workhouse so perhaps A Jones was an attendant at the Workhouse? I had a look for a marriage of Annie to a Jones after your message but nothing seems to tie up so it may just be there was no relation, although at times they often put details of who the informant was so obviously they missed that out this time.
Do you think you would be able to send me a copy of the Death Certificate, just for my records, if you wouldn't mind. If you want to send via an email address it would be 4 (*) (spaces replaced with .)

Florence must have come out of the workhouse as she had a daughter in the workhouse in 1911 and then went on to marry a Percival MOORE and have two more children, although I have a note from her grandson to say that Florence died in Damers Hospital. All a little complex! Let me know if you don't have those details.

Regards, Marion

Under the British Listed Buildings you will find that the Dalkeith Hotel went from 83 - 101 Old Christchurh Road -
1. OLD CHRISTCHURCH ROAD
5186 (North Side)

SZ 09 SE 13/150 No 83-101, (Dalkeith Building
II
2.
Terrace of shops, offices and dwellings. Dated 1893. Principally brick with limestone trim and detailing, and some sections of timber framing; steep roofs, with plain tiles and various multiple stacks with 'Tudor' detailing. A long run of building with complex varieties of eclectic detailing including 'free-style' elements deep wings at back with canted corners and courtyards. Four-and-a-half storeys, from rounded corner at left hand end, 2 bays in brick, 3 with 2 storeys of timber framed projecting double-gabled bays, central bay in brick, 3 bays to right of centre as to left, brick terminal bay and octagonal turret extreme-right. Bays generally marked by octagonal brick piers. Variety of windows, all with plate glass, sash, many with upper sashes containing glazing bars to small square panes; hexagonal bays at first floor under stone detailed overhang, and in timber gabled upper two storeys, cross-mullioned casements, and decorative bargeboards. At back are deep wings with canted corners, and pointed arch spanning two-storey recesses at party walls. At left and right-hand ends are grouped Venetian Gothic windows at first floor. This is a very rich eclectic building, which has retained almost all of its detail from origin; only the ground floor has gone to continuous varied late C20 shop fronts. In the
context of much architecture of this period in Bournemouth, this is an excellent
and bold terrace of strong personality.

The entrance to the Hotel was on the corner of the Dalkeith steps at No 83.

Dorset / Re: Bournemouth Burial 1889 which Cemetery?

Hi Peter,

This link gives some insight into Bournemouth Cemeteries in 1900 so might give you an idea - I doubt if it would have been the later one in Boscombe.

I used to live at No 87 Old Christchurch Road - there was a Dance Studio on the first floor and flats on the second and third floors - we called the placed Halfway to Heaven - there were over 80 stairs to the top flat and no lift! That was back in 1970 and I don't think things have changed much since in that area - all of the other properties were very similar - apart from No 81 where there was a Club (called the 81 Club!)

The only other possibility could be Merry Field Hill. This comes from Dorset Places Names - Their meanings and Origins. " Merry Field Hill (in Colehill) Meriefelde 1595. 'pleasant field' or 'field where merry-making took place', from Old English myrge and field"

It's the closest I can find for you.

Hi Deano,

I think you will find Merefield was in Wiltshire. It may have been on the border of Dorset at one time but the only one I know of is now classified to be in Wiltshire.

Hi Steve

You're welcome - let me know if you prove his death.

No - Joyce is still an enigma, it would help if I knew the year she was born of course but all I have to go on is a photograph and a comment on a postcard by an Aunt and a couple of other members of the family! Like chasing fog in the dark!!

Cheers, Marion
