US Lookup Requests / Re: Sir Robert Peel
« on: Wednesday 30 June 10 13:08 BST (UK)  »
Thanks for your response jorose.

Thomas Greener Smith married Elizabeth Watson (nee Peel) a widow on 28th November 1857 at Witton Gilbert, Durham, England after they met when she got work in the offices at the colliery where he worked.

She had previously been married to William Walter Watson in 1854 and had a son John Watson in 1855.
Following their wedding in 1857 the couple seem to disappear from the records.
They only reappear in 1863 when they emigrated to America where on 23rd November 1863  he and Elizabeth arrived at Ellis Island, New York, aboard the SS.  W. Rathbone.
They settled in Illinois.
Thomas Greener and John Watson became co owners of the Smith Watson coal mine in Eaton, Weld County, Colorado.

I don't know which Robert Peel is alleged to be linked here but assumed it to be the Prime Minister and founder of the Bow Street Runners and therefor the more famous. The suggestion that there is a link to him has been a thorn in my side for some time now and I too was coming to the conclusion that Stone had no actual proof.
It does seem an audacious claim if it is based on nothing more than a family's folk lore.

Can anyone verify a claim by Wilbur Fisk Stone in his History of Colorado published in 1918 that William Walter Watson is directly descended from Sir Robert Peel
Watson was born in Oberlln, Kansas, May 30, 1887 the son of John Watson an English imigrant who was the son of William Watson and Elizabeth nee Peel born 22nd March 1831 in England

Thanks

Boy have I wasted a months research. I thought I was going great tracing my roots back to Overthwaite farm Farleton and beyond that to Witherslack.

I have now discovered that my Gt Gt grandfather was Richard Bell b. 1790 at Kirkby Thore and he had a grocers shop in Rain Hill, Brough. How he found time with eleven children I don't know although he employed his one son as a "butter carrier". Must have sold a lot!

What I would really love is some old photos of the area or even the shop.
Does anyone have any or links to some photos or know if the shop still stands or whats there now?

Oh and by the way, is anyone else descended from Richard Bell and his wife Jane?

Just signed up as I am struggling a bit.

I have traced my Gt Gt Grandfather James Barrow Bell to Overthwaite Farm near Farleton but would like to know his wife Nancy's maiden name. Is anyone on the same track please.
