Inverness / Re: Murdo Urquhart, died 1930

There are 3 graveyards in Inverness City Centre (Chapel Yard and Greyfriars which are both adjacent to Friars Lane, and Old High Churchyard which is only a hop step and jump away) but they were about full by then. Chances are he is interred in Tomnahurich Cemetery, and an enquiry to Highland Council Cemeteries Dept at Kilvean Crematorium/Cemetery (which is way out of town, off the Fort William road) should tell you whether he is in Tomnahurich or not, since you have a date of death. The office telephone number is 01463 717849

I tried the online search for Tomnahurich but came up empty. Won't hurt to give Kilvean a call though, you never know. Thanks for the number.

Thanks guys.

I will look into the Donald Urquhart thing - possibly an Uncle or something? The connection with Ross-shire makes it plausible.

Thanks for the replies!

The curious thing is, nothing suggests that the pair were, in fact, Catholic. Both their parents' marriages were according to the Established Church of Scotland. Additionally, after they emigrated to the USA with their young family in the 1920s, they are listed as "Presbyterian."

The usual residence of both groom and bride is given simply as, "Beauly, Parish of Kilmorack." The minister is John Cameron, Roman Catholic Clergyman.

As I've been discovering, Urquhart isn't exactly an uncommon surname in these parts! But, you're right, it would seem to be a coincidence for them not to be related somehow.

Yes, I understand now about the "court." Thank you. :)

Inverness / Murdo Urquhart, died 1930

I'm looking to locate the grave of my ancestor, Murdo Urquhart, who died at 5 Brown Street in 1930 but I have no idea where to begin. Will be visiting Inverness next week and would so like to find his place of rest. Any help gratefully received.

That's interesting, Annie. Unfortunately, the groom's father was deceased at the time of the union. As far as I'm aware, there is no-one named Donald in the immediate family but I will check that.

As I mentioned before, both groom and bride were from Wester Ross and may have had no family living nearby at the time.

I'm beginning to think they eloped!

Annie,

No number I'm afraid. Just, "Friars Court," for both the location and for the residence of the groom. It's curious. But then, the entry above it simply has, "Parish of Fearn," as usual residence so I should be thankful!

Inverness / Beauly chapel
« on: Thursday 03 May 18 00:32 BST (UK)  »
I'm researching a marriage which took place in 1900 at Beauly.

On the registration document it gives the location as: "The Roman Catholic Chapel Beauly." Would I be right in assuming this to mean St. Mary's or was there a smaller chapel in the area too? Is there any reason it wouldn't simply be called St. Mary's on the document?

Thanks, Conner, that's exactly what I was looking for.

I couldn't find a Friars Court in any of the maps I had seen online, so thanks again for that. We'll be visiting Inverness next weekend so I'll have a look in person, even though there's nothing to be seen of Friars Court today.

Ruskie, when I first saw Friars Court mentioned as the marriage venue I imagined an official building but then I noted that the groom lived there to. Seemed odd but the other meaning (that of a yard/tenement) makes more sense.

Cheers.
