You might find a report of an inquest on this if you look in the papers.

Thank you, I’ll have a look

Should have said that even if the father is known, if the mother isn't married, and the father isn't present at the registration (I expect James was at work in the Mill), then he cannot be shown on the birth certificate.

I've a couple of families where there was a birth and a subsequent marriage in the same quarter.  In some cases the child is absolutely scrupulous using the correct 'mother's maiden name' surname in official documents, but yet has the family name in censuses with the family.

I am coming to think that James and Harriet split up - so perhaps Matilda didn't want to keep his name.  And George William became "Dews" as you pointed out!

That's interesting to know, thanks :)

Ah thank you all so much. The whole Wigham / Wigan explanation makes so much sense now. In the nicest possible way I wonder if it's written Wigham due to Bernard being from Ireland so having a potential accent.

I'd love to be able to dig further into James Dewhursts family history but I seem to keep hitting a wall with that, it seems quite a common name of the area - would the reason he wasn't on Matilda's birth certificate be because they weren't married even if they were together??

Thanks again everyone, you've been a huge help :)

Without doing any digging, my view is that her third husband put the name of her first (illegitimate) daughter’s father’s name on the death certificate, in his way giving the daughter her heritage.  If ever the daughter ever came across the certificate in the future it would answer/ or confirm her questions.  Who know, perhaps the mother had even told her 3rd husband and daughter that she had been married to  She may have told her daughter that she had ‘lost’ her birth cert and there had never been a reason for her to obtain a copy.

Family history often uncovers little white lies which the person thought they had gotten away with.

Have you looked for Wigham in close proximity to Harriet Whitworth about a year/9 months before Matilda was born.

What a great idea, I’d love it to be that.  I’m out at the moment but I’ll definitely be searching for that when I get back. Thanks everyone for helping :)
