Just read that again this morning, that means that there was a George cranwell in that area of Norfolk at that time. Would you have any idea why I can't find him under any births?

Wow, Thankyou so much for that. I'll have a try at that tomorrow. If George did change his name from James when he moved to London, then I have got his parents names, William and Martha, as James and his brothers William and Thomas show their names at their baptisms. I suppose you never really can know for certain though if someone dies change their name? I can't find a death for James cranwell born 1789, but obviously have got the one for George born 1790, he died in 1846.

And the plot thickens! I feel they are possibly related to the George cranwell I am trying to trace, but I know mine was born 1790, then lived mainly in Bermondsey as a bootmaker, married to a Martha lee, they had 5 children, including the James who was hung! His death was 1846 Bermondsey, but I can never find where he was born, or his parents names.

Just to confuse me more, in 1874, one of George's sons was hung, and among the various witnesses called, was various family who mentioned their now deceased mother and father, George and Martha, and an uncle William! And his birthdate works out about 1794, so you would think that's George's brother? But none of that ever shies georges birth, only that it was 1790 from a census

Thanks for trying! How can someone not be traced, when you know when he was born? Really annoying isn't it? It amazes me how people try to help, restores my faith in human nature! 😂

That's worth me checking into. I know he was born around 1790, quite strange that I found a William cranwell who was born in Norfolk, but was living in long lane Bermondsey, the same as my George cranwell, he was born in 1794, so you would think they could be brothers! But can't find a George born in Norfolk in 1790 ish! Also a Thomas cranwell who,is Williams brother, ended up in the leather district of Bermondsey.

The George cranwell I am trying to research is the father of Martha and Joseph George. Although he seems to have lived and worked mainly in Southwark and Bermondsey, apparently he wasn't born in what was then Surrey! I'm guessing you are much better at this than me, just by the speed that you replied, any advice as to how I can find where he was born, or his parents? Thanks

Hi
Never done this before, so sorry if it's wrong! Trying to find records of a marriage between George cranwell and Martha lee, at st Mary's newington 1813. I can find the basic information, but have been trying to find George's birthplace for ages, just wondered if there would be any more detailed records if the wedding anywhere that might help. Thanks, julie
