Australia / Re: Michael Joseph Davey - Melbourne policeman

Thanks Sue, I'm a bit of an amateur when it comes to researching this kind of thing.

MJ Davey's father was Michael Davey, died 1906
His mother Eliza (nee Healey) died 1898 at Creswick

MJ Davey was born at Sulky Gully 1872

MJD was survived by a brother James

So this family was around the Ballarat area rather than Violet Town, so quite some distance apart.

But if you can find any link to the John Davey family, that would help. Thanks so much

Actually I'd quite like an excuse to come back over: I lived in VIC till 2 years ago and still have half my stuff in storage there. But I'd like to be sure I can pore over police records before I book, say, 2 or 3 weeks back there to research this

Ah but this is really useful, Shume, because the period where I have my two PC Daveys is 1902-8 or 9. I used to be in Melbourne, which is where I first heard of MJD, but am now in UK, but if I need an excuse to spend a few weeks in police archives or public records VIC I'll get back on a plane in the coming months!

Thanks for the replies. So, Sue, it looks like John Davey was no obvious relative of Michael Joseph? Just a coincidence to have two PC Daveys on the same beat at same time.
And yes Judith, I imagine he would only have been on the Victorian section, but he did go inter-state for some of the crimes he investigated so he may have been on more than one section. Would be good to know.

Australia / Michael Joseph Davey - Melbourne policeman
« on: Wednesday 14 February 24 15:04 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to do some research into the career of a Melbourne policeman who was active from 1902 to 1932. I'm having a problem with the start of his career because there were from 1902-1908 TWO PC Daveys working out of North Melbourne police station.

I'd love to know if the other PC Davey was a relative, or was Davey just a common surname around Melbourne at the time and it was pure coincidence?

I also need to know which of the cases I have seen reported in newspaper archives involving "Constable Davey" were dealt with by Michael Joseph Davey and which were by the other PC Davey. I'm guessing I may have to go to Victorian Police Archives to ask more but if anybody has any tips, please let me know.

According to an obituary I read of MJ Davey, he was part of the King's personal bodyguard during a Royal visit to Australia in 1927. Any hints on how I can find out more about this - itinerary, duration, incidents? - also gratefully received.

Thanks for those articles, Jenny. I had picked up most of that info from my own Trove searches. But I am interested in the large monument mentioned - do you know any more about that? Does it mention RT Vaughan specifically or is it just a general memorial to 'deceased comrades'?

There was an excellent feature in 1922 I think in the Williamstown Chronicle which I found on Trove, in which Mr Vaughan recounts highlights from his life.

I'd happily communicate more in some sort of direct message if you like, but am pleased to have found the 2 Vaughan brothers both married Jacobson sisters - Thanks to everyone on this stream for unearthing that nugget.

Great information, both of you. How lovely that the two brothers met the two sisters. The kind of thing period dramas are made of!

I got interested because of the old RT Vaughan (father-in-law of the Jacobson girls since they both married his sons) whose grave I visited yesterday but the grave has no headstone, which seems rather tragic. I wanted to see if there are any living relatives close enough related to be interested.

So I'll be searching next for the grandchildren of Charles Seymour Vaughan since some of them may just be alive still today

Thanks so much Jamjar.

So looks like Richard Harry Vaughan must be the one who drowned at sea since there is no record of his death.

What an interesting coincidence (?) that Charles Seymour Vaughan married a Margueritta Helena Jacobson nine years before his brother George W. married Letitia Jacobson. Or were Margueritta and Letitia related? So no coincidence...

So if George W. had no children; and Richard Harry died at sea (unmarried?)...

Maybe the only offspring from that generation would be Charles Seymour Vaughan and any children of Elizabeth Mabel? And did Charles Seymour Vaughan have children?

Maybe I can wait and see if Brunyisland can help with more info on the Vaughan family from her research
