Lancashire / Re: John Dean & Elizabeth Lynch

I have just come across this thread. What caught my eye was the man named Dean being a plasterer. Not such a common trade but I have quite a few Dean people among my paternal ancestors, 3 of which were also plasterers.
They were brothers named James, John and Joseph Joy Dean each born around 1810-1820. The latter two raised their families in Carrickfergus Co. Antrim while James Dean raised his family in Co. Donegal.

Their father was Hercules Dean 1774 – 1849, a Catholic tenant farmer up on the top of Black mountain overlooking Belfast. There is a well-established tradition passed down through generations that Hercules’ mother was a daughter of Francis Joy, the man who established the Belfast News Letter in 1737. The name Joy, as a Christian name, has been carried down to many of the Dean descendants.

If anyone else has done any research on this family it would be great to compare notes.

Thanks for the feedback on this.

I'll follow it up with PRONI.

I don’t think the original records are on-line. PRONI may have them though. The Primary Valuation records for Divis were published in 1861. I assume you are referring to plot 5?
Thanks for looking in to this.
What caught my attention about Divis is the tenant John Gilmore at plot 3 which is listed as being 142 Acres. Clearly that's wrong. By my calculations Plot 5 would be somewhere around that size though which leads me to think there was an error - either on the original sheets or the transcription.

A 2011 archaeological report by a QUB team describes the ruins of three adjacent cottiers cottages on plot 5 in the early part of the 19th century but they hit the same issue with the GV listing and so couldn't identify the owner/s.

The man who held most of the land adjacent in Black Mountain Townland was Hercules Dean (my ggg grandfather) who died during the famine before the GV.
Hercules' daughter Rose married a Gilmore.

Does anyone know if the Griffiths Valuation books in their original form can be viewed online?
I assume they would have been hand-written.
I have a large area of land in the Divis Townland (in Co. Antrim) which has no one's name attached to it in the typed GV listing.
I would like to check if there may have been an error in transcription?

.......Choose another App & More Apps but all work apart from Adobe which says "There was an error opening this document. The file is damaged and could not be repaired"
Yes, I get the same error message.
Your workaround works beautifully though!
I never would have thought of it.
Thanks very much

Phil
The files are likely not corrupted, though you may get a message saying they are from Adobe. If I recall is only the biggest files and workaround is to right click on them and open with something else eg Chrome or Firefox web browsers.

Thanks Jon_ni
I think I can see what's going on now - opening a link in Edge starts a download of pdf to the PC hard drive.
But the downloaded pdf can't be opened.
But as you suggested - same action in Firefox opens up the pdf in the browser window without problems.
But if I want a copy on my PC and try to download from the browser window, I get a pdf file the same corrupted file problem.
Perhaps proni would prefer we don't have personal copies?
Anyhow, I can see Wm. Gilmore at Ballywinnett now - he had 5 acres and had to pay 3/- tax p.a. on it

Thanks very much for this very useful information aghadowey and Jon_ni
So Ballywinnett was near Carnmoney. I had hoped to make a family connection between Wm. Gilmore there in 1826 and John Gilmore in Divis Townland in the later Griffiths Valuation but given the separation of the two areas perhaps not.

I wasn’t aware of the PRONI TAB records for NI. These could be very useful given they may include area in acres and the land assessment grade which would help correlate plots with holdings in the later Griffiths.
I have downloaded three large PRONI Tithe PDF lists for Shankill but no luck so far as all three files are corrupted.  I’ll try again later.

The Common Room / Ballywinnett Townland in the Shankill civil parish
« on: Monday 31 October 22 21:22 GMT (UK)  »

I have an ancestor who appears in the Tithe Applotment list 1826 for Shankill Parish County Antrim as
Gilmore, Wm. Townland : Ballywinnett Year: 1826
But I can find no trace of any Townland named either Ballywinnett or Bally Winnett.
I've looked in Townlands.ie and Googled without success.
Has any one any other suggestions ?
Philip

BTW the land in question was formerly owned/occupied by Hercules Dean
Being R.C. more likely he was an 'occupier' on Crown Land.
