Family History Beginners Board / Can you date this wedding photograph
« on: Sunday 24 September 23 13:13 BST (UK)  »
This picture has bugged me for many years.
It is allegedly of my husbands uncle, although we have never been unable to find any marriage record for him and this lady.
I have managed to pin down the marriage to the church as St.Lukes, Redcliffe Square London SW10 from the photographers stamp on the back and also the window in the background of the photograph. Sadly the photographer is no longer in existence so I cannot ask them about the photograph. The records for St.Lukes are not on-line for the period I assume this picture was taken and they only reside in the London Metropolitan Archives which I cannot as yet get to being in Scotland

Any help as to the possible date of the picture would be enormously welcome.
Whatever clues (no matter however small) that you can discern from anything in the picture, may just give me the essential key to unlocking this picture and resolving this conundrum once and for all
Thank you

Thank you all for your thoughts so far.
The picture is of a grandfather with his grandchildren.

The youngest little boy on the left in the short trousers is believed to be Patrick CLARK born 1892 and I thought he looked to be around 4 years old which would make the picture to around 1896.

So from all your comments, I think I am now pretty comfortable that this picture was taken somewhere mid 1890's

Thank you everyone

Family History Beginners Board / What is the date of this studio taken photograph ?
« on: Thursday 23 February 23 16:11 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone help me date this studio family portrait please ?

If I can narrow down the date a little, I should then be able to identify each of the children shown in it

Thank you in advance of your help

Patricia

Thank you both. That has been really useful and especially for the links to the dress code for 1880 and 1882 have been great confirmation.
I just need to sort out who is who now, I already know 7 of them and given the date being narrowed down that should help enormously

Can you assist me dating this picture please.

The man in the centre is Edward CLARK who lived 1836-1886. Around him is his wife and many children.
He is the younger brother of my 2x Great grandfather Thomas CLARK.

I am assuming their attire gives clues as to the date but I cannot interpret those clues.

Any help would be gratefully appreciated
Thank you

Family History Beginners Board / Re: Prisoners in Dartmoor Prison

Thank you both Shaun J & Ciderdrinker.  FMPast is not at all helpful in its transcriptions but at least I now know where to find them. I have trawled through 218 records for James READ and have discovered that neither the 2 photo's you suggested were the correct ones.
However, given you both put me onto the correct place I have found been able to identify the correct picture of my James READ it is one indexed as D737. This was identified because Shaun J gave me the clue with the newspaper extract, I found the FMPast entry & it had his Prisoner number as D737 on it, so I know he is the correct one.

I have just one question for Shaun J - please , where did you get
"James Read, born Isleham 1850 was convicted at Long Sutton on 5/7/1877 & given 7 year, Released from Dartmoor to "DPAS", Worcester in July 1882"

I have been unable to track that bit down

Thank you so much for all the info Shaun J, you have been so very very helpful.

I have now found him on the 1881 census.

What I cannot get is his photo off FMPast, I do have a PRO subscription so I should be able to access it, but whatever I try it will not come up.

Should I be accessing a particular record set ? How did you do it ?

Family History Beginners Board / Prisoners in Dartmoor Prison
« on: Saturday 10 December 22 10:47 GMT (UK)  »
Hi
I have an ancestor who was a habitual criminal. He used a number of Alias's, in the Newspapers appearing in Court a number of times and inevitably he ended up in Jail.
His name is James READ of Isleham,Ely Born 1850 +/- 4yrs and I have found him on the 1901 census in HMP Dartmoor. His occupation is listed as a Thief and he is transcribed as Married.
I have not found him on the 1871, 1881 and 1891 census.
I also do not know who and when he married.
And also I do not know when and where he died.

I would desperately like to know if there is any way I can access his prison records which may enable me to answer a number of my questions and also if there are any mugshots of him still in existence.

Any help/guidance/suggestions would be most gratefully received
Thank you in advance
Patricia

Family History Beginners Board / 1939 register abbreviations
« on: Tuesday 06 December 22 13:51 GMT (UK)  »
I am looking at an entry for Ann BLACKWELL on the 1939 register with a Birth date of 26/1/1884, a Maid at 23 Crooked Usage Finchley.
Along her entry line are additional dates written in a different hand and a different pen.
One entry just says 26-10-85 and the other says DFE 18-12-48.

Any suggestions as to what they are or mean, and in particular what the letters DFE stand for, would be greatly appreciated

Many thanks in advance
Patricia
