Thank you so much! That's got me off to a flying start - I'll get myself off to the GRO page to order that marriage cert next.

Lincolnshire Lookup Requests / George HILL and Harriet ROBINSON Census Lookup(s)
« on: Sunday 21 October 07 12:25 BST (UK)  »
I'm looking for my GGGrandparents, George HILL and Harriet ROBINSON.

I have them on the 1901 census (http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,183463.0.html) there.

I also have two possibilities for Harriet on the 1861 census, but I have no idea which and they're both born in Lincoln.

Here's the info I have
George HILL b~1851 Lantoft?
Harriet ROBINSON b 1855 Lincoln
George married Harriet in Q3 1876 in Lincoln.

Anything which can help me identify the right 1861 for Harriet (on freecen) and data from '61 for George, plus 1871, 1881 and 1891 for both would be smashing

thanks in advance

Nottinghamshire Lookup Requests / William WILKINSON b~1852
« on: Sunday 14 October 07 22:38 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I'm looking for William WILKINSON, born~1852 in Beesthorpe, Notts.

I have him and his family in 1881 and 1891 including wife Jane b~1852 and son John Wm b~1879

Anything from the 1871 or earlier census would be much appreciated, as well as if he's still around in 1901.

He's usually Ag Lab (aren't they all?) and probably married by 1874 (at age ~22 - so there could be more children further back)

[edited to add: I can find two marriages which might be him, one is Sarah Jane Clay, Bingham in 1874, the other is Jane Troop, Newark in 1873 - I'm inclined toward the Newark one given that he's from Beesthorpe, and also that the name for the wife is just Jane - any thoughts anyone?]

Thanks for any help

Staffordshire Lookup Requests / Alice May FEARNEY lookup 1901 please
« on: Sunday 14 October 07 18:08 BST (UK)  »
Hi, please could someone look up the 1901 census for

Alice May FEARNEY born 1898

I'm afraid I don't know exactly where she was born, but she married Frank Bryan COTTRELL who was born in Solihull I think.
(births: June 1897 Cottrell Frank Bryan Solihull 6d 605)

We know that she was called FEARNEY only from family lore, and I can't find a marriage - but it could simply be that the records aren't online.

Many thanks for any help.

Lincolnshire / Re: Trent street Gainsborough
« on: Friday 13 April 07 13:50 BST (UK)  »
The prices are low in Gainsborough, and if Trent St is where I'm thinking then it's in a less desireable part of Gainsborough. I grew up in Gains, uphills, this is down the hills. I think the Victorian Terraces are lovely, but due to a lack of amenities and development Gainsborough has lost some of the lustre it had as a thriving port and railway/manufacturing town.

If you do visit (which I'd recommend!) then you should not just visit the Victorian Terraces. There's a fabulous manor house (Old Hall) overlooked by some more fantastic Victorian and Edwardian houses. The town used to be big on brewing beer and agricultural machines (at least two of my grandfathers worked at Marshalls (now a Tesco) which was a big industry until past WW2)

Anyway, I could go on. My mum is a mine of local history, so I ask her all the time!

Good luck finding the house.

Family History Beginners Board / Re: Losing hope of finding BASSHAM
« on: Tuesday 05 December 06 13:53 GMT (UK)  »
there is an Isabella Bassham birth registered in apr-jun qtr 1885
Lanchester (1875-38), durham. 10a 306
Do you think this could be her by any chance?
I know its still older than you were looking for but its a possibility.

I think that this one is too old, and I'm expecting her to be in the Hull area (although if she is from a travelling family...)

I couldn't view the Gainsborough Poor House records as 1926 is still classified.  :(

The Common Room / Re: Isn't it frustrating ...
« on: Thursday 26 October 06 13:43 BST (UK)  »
Ah, I confess, when I first started I couldn't give much (if anything) back - and I do sometimes go for weeks without checking my various boards...

That all said, I do like to get back to people - at the very least a "thank you, but that's not my rellie" or "That's excellent - can you tell me how you found that?"

The most frustrating thing for me (being new at this) is when someone finds something REALLY useful, but then never responds when you ask them how/where they found it! As you say, it's the research and the finding things out yourself which is the fun!

And, I'm looking forward to my holiday in November when my OH has finally agreed to drive me to a couple of archives! Woo! I'll be posting a (small) lookup offer in the relevant places. After all, I've had SO much help from here, it's only fair to offer it in return.
