Galway / Re: Naughton/ Broderick families from tynagh Galway

Maiden Stone, possible remnant of Edward is a birth in May 25 1866 of an Edward Naughton , mother Mary, father was a Joseph Costillo, a militiaman in Loughrea town, and Mary having her own name on this birth cert  would imply they were not married.
A Sabina Naughton married in 1865 to a Michael Gill  has a father Edward Naughton , servant,  also of Loughrea town.
Ellen Naughton married in 1868 has a father , also Edward, but listed as a herdsman, also from Loughrea. so two Edwards may imply relatives of your Original Edward. No Anthonys found on my first searches.
63 search results for Naughton  from 1860 to 1890, I would search for matching names first then compare residence to Maps of Tynagh, cross ref with the Babtisms records for Tynagh as well.

Galway / Leitrimmore East Galway Costelloe's
« on: Monday 06 February 23 20:09 GMT (UK)  »
 Hello,
I posted some info to clarify which Margaret Costello married Laurence Burke.
Hopefully Samhuzz reads the post.

I am stuck/ brick walled at or  with a ggggrandad ,  John Costelloe born 1793 in Leitrimmore.

His marriage was to Mary Flanagan, 1825, they had a Mary,  a Bridget, then James my gggranddad then there is a  a gap of records  from 39 to 58,  during the  famine years in the Leitrim Parish books.

I ordered and paid for Johns  death cert from 1868 in Leitrim, confirmed in the parish books.
There were twoJohns died in 1867 and 1868.

I know John Costelloe is James Costelloe b 1837 (wife Mary Dwyer)   father.
James 2 her brother is my great Granddad , my Grandfather Roberts father.

I have everything covered except for other brothers and sisters of James 1 born 1837.

Grififths evaluation and Tythes records 1828  confirm a John,  and the same  John  Costelloe with an e in Leitrimmore and Leitrimbeg for John, 1856,   and in Kylebrack for John and James 1856, sharing land together.

They both worked for or were tenant famers for Lord Clonbrock, who was a wonderful man and landlord, an exception to the rule in the tenat clearance times, this  according to my research.

L Clonbrock has extensive photography, first camera in that area circa 1860's??
look forward to a better record search if I get back to the old sod one day.

I also found a John Costello no e in Ahascragh, 1825, which was Lord Clonbrocks main house and property. Clonbrock owned all the land in Leitrim Parish or Barony as well, the Costelloe's worked the same plots until they bought them in 1912 ??

going way back 1588 John MacCostelloe sold all the family properties, quite a big list, to Lucas Dillon, Mayo Roscommon and Galway properties that they had owned for over 500 years.

Lord Clonbrock  was his direct  descendant.

Also, the   Dillons were known for helping families associated with them, John Mac C daughter had married a Dillon son of Lucas, so possibly connection through there somehow.

Eg.In 1735 ?? Jordan MacCostelloe, Esq, after bad business deals ,  was give a role on the Mayo properties his ancestor  had sold,  as a favour/job and place to live,  so there is a precedent for helping associated family members like this.

Thanks.

Galway / Re: Where else to look for a marriage?

The Margaret Costelloe that married Burke from Nutgrove was born in 1881, Father James,  mother Margaret Mary Martin. Margaret Costelloe from Leitrimmore is the sister of Delia Kennedy, but was still unmarried and at home in Leitrimmore in 1901 census. Burke and his Margaret married in 1897 .
This other James Costelloe and Margret Mary Costelloe nee Martin was from Burrogue, also East Galway,  Woodford area.

I have family still in Leitrimmore,
Thanks

Thank You QotW,
I do have that info  though, it is Andrew before him that is mia!
Sorry for the work you did, i have another Andrew Graham in Monaghan that might fit, whose dad was Andrew as well. Thinking the three Andrews in a row  is a trend!! :)
My G Dad Andy was not the most responsible Father either,  another trend it seems, and his son, my moms brother, was also Andrew, known as Junior, from Dublin docks southside area , Trinity Ward.
Thanks again Q

Searched the Armagh chain on here  for above families in my family  Tree. 1911 Census has my Grandad Andrew, his dad Andrew Snr, wife  Margaret Jane and  sister Ellen  Williamson at Grand Dads birth and found her mom who is Anna Carmichael. Have both Williamson and Carmichael  dads and brothers, but no Graham info after Andrew Graham Snr. Any info tips or searching sites would be appreciated.

Leitrim is my Dads area, and the Hickeys and Donahoes in our family tree are from Shangarry and Carramore, beside or possibly in Tynagh. The early parish book lists have 10 or twelve adults from each family in the parish at the same time  it seems, and the IE site shows that as well. The famine really did empty that part of East Galway,  as areas such as Marble Hill, the Burkes HQ,  and Lord Clonbrocks Estates closed down, and by 1911 census only a few of each family were still working their land. Also noticed the people not born during the industrial age, say from 1860's and prior, seemed to live longer than the those after 1870's. At least in most of my 6 families i have researched. Probably a Thesis or three in those records, and the records for Tynagh and Letrim have gaps from 1839 to 1855, Famine, or in Irish,  An Gortan More,  years mostly. Not sure why the records are missing, big gap for my research. And we were never allowed to say the P word before Famine growing up in Canada, there was quite a lot of other food available.

IrishGeneoogy site, civilrecords.irishgeneology.ie  is excellent for research in any area of Ireland i have found. Use Civil Records section.  Tynagh has a seperate set of books as well, someone above mentioned that. The latin and writng is hard to decipher sometimes, but if you plug away long enough you start to get a rythym. I have hockey or soccer on while i stroll through dates, the the Gen site gets you dates to check,  and then go to the parish books on line to fill out and confirm the details.
need to know general and or specific area that you ancestors hail from.

Wales / Re: Gilbert De Angulo, circa 1160
« on: Friday 13 January 23 21:48 GMT (UK)  »
I have some info re this man , his family started 5 or 6 other clans in Ireland.
My avatar name is the Irish spelling, at least one variation, and  i have assembled info from legal docs etc for an attempt to sort thru the families and associated Irish clans they married into, inclding the ONeils of Clanaboy, The OReillys of East Breffney, The Peppards of Chester and Ardee , The De Lacys of Meath and first Earl of Ulster, a  very famous Family, and the Butlers, Earls of Ormond. Amazing to find their family members in the earliest legal docs and Abbeys rolls. Also , the first 5 brothers to come to Ireland, with their father Gausslyn (Jocelyne ) were in order William d 1208, Gilbert d 1212, Philip d 1230, Richard d 1200 and Walter d 1215. William married Joan Peppard, some of his decsendants used Fitz William as a middle name, he built Atherdee( Ardee) Castle in Louth and his sons rebuilt Trim Castle and were styled Lords of Ardee. Ormond Deeds have over twenty or more grants and references of this family.  More Later
Thanks

Ireland / Peppard Clan
« on: Friday 13 January 23 19:10 GMT (UK)  »
Following up on last note, Peppards were from Chester in England and Peter Peppard was close with King John, and was a Justiciar Of Ireland circa 1200.
he had been in Johns entorage when John was Prince of Ireland 1285 visit.
His sister Joan de Peppard . in legal docs sometimes Pipard,  married William De Angulo, who was Breifly Third Baron Navan. William built Ardee Castle, as that was what the De Angulo did for the De Lacy Clan, mercenaries and Military Engineers.  Wliiam, also First Lord of Atherdee(Ardee) and Joan had Gilbert, Roger and Peter and William  as sons. Ormond Deeds has a ton of Peppard info, available online, eg Deed 82)  William Peppard land grant from Stephen de Hereford(famous Knight)  More to come later
