I know of a Griffith John Petty and he was living in 18 John Street, Nantyffyllon, Maesteg in 1937 ... He was in the Maesteg Police Court in May 1937 charged with obstructing the highway by challenging people to have a fight with him and affray.
He also was charged with the affray with my Great Grandmother who then lived next door to him. She told the Police Court in Maesteg that when he was outside his house everyone would go in their houses and close the door as he was a known troublemaker. On 1 May 1937, my Great Grandmother Phyllis Cantle was in John Street when he happened to be outside his house on the street. He called her bad names and then my Great Grandfather arrived home and told Griffith John Petty off. He went to hit my Great Grandfather but missed and hit my Great Grandmother by mistake ... He also alleged in the Maesteg Police Court that my Great Grandmother called him "a dirty, filthy rotten pig" but my Great Grandmother denied it. He also claimed she threw a stone at him and gave him a black eye. The affray is mentioned in The Glamorgan Gazette dated Friday, 28 May 1937.
