Gloucestershire Lookup Requests / Re: birth of fanny jones

Many thanks, again, to Suz, and also to alli, for your responses, from which I have learnt a lot about both the period and the area of my Grandmother's birth. I've just finished reading the Coleford Area Guide, as suggested by Suz. Quite fascinating! Would that I could visit that beautiful area myself! Not likely, as I'm past venturing so far from home "down under", but, today, I have enjoyed "armchair travelling", via the Coleford Guide.

Thanks to ChasH, Suzard, Jo and Gillg for your helpful suggestions re my maternal Grandmother, Fanny Jones' birth. I have obtained the BC, Vol11a, Page 28, as suggested. This Fanny could be mine, except for the occupation of her father, James, as a stone mason. My Fanny's father, James, was a builder, as mentioned on Fanny's marriage certificate, March, 1885, to William MacDonald. On FreeBMD, I've found a marriage of a Fanny Price and a James Jones, Sept Qtr, 1861, District of Monmouth; and, on FreeCen, 1871 England Census, I've found a Fanny Jones, 55, widow, and her daughter, Fanny Jones, 7, born West Dean, Gloucester, living in Berry Hill, Monmouth, sub-district, Coleford. As my Fanny was thought to have had brothers, perhaps this Fanny Jones is not mine! Any thoughts?

Many thanks, Winston, for trying to find William's birth. He is certainly elusive!

In the 1881 Census, I found a William MacDonald, unmarried, cabinet maker, born in Doncaster, York, boarding at Woodland Hill, 2 Portland St., Lambeth, Surrey, England, where the Head of Household was a widow, Ann Chatlacombe, but his age was 42, which would have meant that he was born about 1839-40, which could explain why I haven't found him in the 1853-6 Birth Records. But this William may not be mine, anyway!

Still searching from Australia, where I live!

Thank you, Winston, for your reply.

On William and Fanny's marriage certificate, William's father's name is James MacDonald and his occupation is builder.

Hoping this helps. knwmac.

Many thanks for your interest and replies.
Here are the details requested:
William married on 28-3-1885, at St Mark's, Clerkenwell, Middlesex, to Fanny Jones.
Children born to them were:
William Arthur, born 1886 in New Cross, London;
Frances Ellen, born 1887 in Croydon Surrey;
James H., born 1888 in Croydon, Surrey;
Mary M., born 1889 in Croydon, Surrey;
Mabel, born 8-4-1893 in Croydon, Surrey;
Kathleen, born 15-11-1894 in Croydon, Surrey (My mother);
Leonard, born 1896 in Croydon, Surrey;
Bessie, born 6-8-1901 in Croydon, Surrey.

P.S. Fanny Jones was born in Coleford, Gloucester, probably in 1865.

Carolanne
Unfortunately, I've already found that this William is not mine. Many thanks for trying.

Yorkshire (West Riding) / William MacDonald's Birth

Can anyone help me find my carpenter Grandfather William MacDonald's birth in Doncaster, Yorkshire, please? On a visit to London in 2000, I searched birth records from 1853 - 1856 without success. I now suspect he could have been born earlier - perhaps in 1839 or in the 1840's.
