Yorkshire (North Riding) / Re: John Lofthouse family help
« on: Wednesday 07 June 23 19:03 BST (UK)  »
GRO online & freebmd both show surname for that burial as Loftus
Definitely Lofthouse.

Probably depends on who was writing it - in many parts of Yorkshire they'd be pronounced the same.

Yes, a good example is the place in Redcar & Cleveland called 'Loftus'. It was formerly in the North Riding and was orignally called 'Lofthouse'. Presumably the shorter version took over because that's how everyone pronounced it. Anyone making an official record, and who wasn't familiar with the local pronunciation, could easily have written 'Loftus' for 'Lofthouse'.

Northumberland / Re: Swans of Northumberland
« on: Sunday 14 May 23 15:26 BST (UK)  »
I see this is an old thread which has resurfaced, but thought I would add that one of the many Isabel Swans married George Boutflour at Woodhorn on 29 March 1785. She is recorded on a family memorial stone as Isabella Swan, she died in September 1830. The stone is eroded and has been transcribed on FindMyPast as George of Cresswell Hall but it was Cleaswell Hill, a farm. Isabel(la) lived at Newbiggin by sea before her marriage and her father was William.

The Lighter Side / Re: Slapdash census enumerators.
« on: Monday 01 May 23 09:24 BST (UK)  »
I had one census listing the Mother's age as 23 years old and her Daughter's age 13,  her age should have actually been 33. It was correct on the next census.
Carol

When I started researching my family history the first document I found containing a reference to my GG grandfather was the 1851 census. His age was given as 50 when was he was actually 30. He was younger than his wife and so I'll never know whether the enumerator had misread a '3' as a'5' because it was a better fit or simply in error. Either way, it threw me off track for ages as I was looking for someone born 20 years before he was.

I think it says 'int derangement of knee joint'. Internal derangement of knee joint does appear in search results as a mechanical disorder of the knee.

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Re: photo of lady and man

What you are seeing is a photographer's backdrop, according to a book I have read, some photographers had more than one backdrop to suit the occasion. You can clearly see the fold at the bottom where it meets the ground.
BB, the bouquet would have been her own, her husbands buttonhole also. Although photographers often had props, I doubt that flowers would have been provided.
Carol

Funnily enough, I was part of a conversation about this at a local museum event today. Someone said her grandparents married in the 1920s and had studio photos taken which included a bridal bouquet of wax flowers which were a photographer's prop and were re-used.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Re: First World War - service record comment

I think it read 'Tried' rather than 'Freed' and after 'active service' it reads 'disobeying a lawful command'.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Re: Surname in 1620 Baptism Register
« on: Saturday 28 January 23 08:12 GMT (UK)  »
I think after the surname it says 'was baptised'. If you look further down the page there is an entry for John, son of Robert and after the surname (which I can't make out) it says 'was bapt'd'.

The Common Room / Re: Has the wrong name been recorded?

I think mistakes were sometimes made. The marriage certificate records my great great grandfather's father as John whereas he was George.

The accident you are interested in might just miss their date window but uni of Portsmouth, NRM and National Archives have a project looking specifically at railway accidents at work
