Ross & Cromarty / Re: Forbes Family of Millers - Little Lochbroom

Hi, glad to see Forfarian has already answered the question re Scottish Indexes. I’ve just seen I -inaccurately - noted Robert Forbes wife as Abigail Mackenzie. This should read Isabella. The Abigail mentioned in these files was married to George Robertson.
Regards
D

Hi,
I'm currently reading files associated with the Dundonnell Outrages.
When Kenneth Mackenzie died in 1826 it was found he'd left the estate of Dundonnell to his brother-in-law, Robert Roy and other members of his wife's (Kenneth) family, to the exclusion of his brother and sister. According to Malcolm Bangor Jones, "This settlement produced a good deal of ill-feeling both within the family and throughout Ross-shire." No one was ever brought to trial but the investigation contains many interesting facts about those involved and those interviewed.
Robert Forbes was one of several accused of or being an accessory to 'willful fire-raising' and other crimes.
Robert Forbes was a miller at Inverlael and later Ullapool. Some time between 1826-28 he had the charge of the mill at Dundonnell. His wife, Abigail Mackenzie is noted as an illegitimate sister of Kenneth Mackenzie.
These files are available through Scottish Indexes.

Inverness / Re: JohnMackenzie/Jane or Jean McLean

Hi,
Yes I have the original 1861 census from SP.  I ruled out Knocklaw (Ancestry’s transcription) but the writing is such it could be Knockan, Knockban or Knockbain. Early in this thread Gadget indicated Knockan.
I have the record for John’s (jnr) birth and it says both John and Jane were from the Parrish of Lochbroom so I dismissed the latter.
I’ve SP originals for each census, birth and marriage occurring in Scotland. Each subsequent census recorded their place of birth simply as Ross shire. I have a census for 1851 that I believe to be my gggf but I’ve not proven it yet. This census notes John, a seaman…right age, born Ullapool. DNA connections have family from in and around that area too. If this record is accurate for him, there are several other family members listed too.
Cheers, JazzaD

This is a very old post/thread but I’m new here and John Mackenzie and Jane/Jean McLean were my 2 x great grandparents.

John was born circa 1826 and died 10 June 1894
Jane was born circa 1831 and died 30 Jan 1894…..both are buried in Tomnahurich Cemetery, Inverness along with children Alexander 1858-60, Grigor 1866 and Catherine 1863-77.
As previously noted they had 5 children. I descend from their first born John, born 25 July 1855, died Rockhampton, Queensland, Australia 5 January 1916. He emigrated in 1876, he was a merchant seaman (as was his father) although he is listed as a lighthouse keeper/pilot at Sea Hill, Curtis Island for several years later in life. Married Alice Sinclair 1866-1911. They had 6 children, Donald, John, George, Archibald, Catherine and Jean. Alice’s parents were Donald Sinclair and Catherine Cairns.

I am trying to establish where John and Jane were born and who their parents were. Unfortunately their death certificates contain very little. No forenames and no mother’s maiden name on John’s…simply that his father was a ferryman and Jane’s notes her father was John McLean a farmer [crofter?]. The informant for both was listed as a friend (who owned the residence in which they lived) Donald Stewart.
I’m not convinced they were both born in the same area despite what’s listed on the 1861 census.
John (Jnr’s) eldest son, Donald Stewart McKenzie, believed his grandmother’s family were from Little Lochbroom, I’ve a letter he wrote seeking help to locate them in 1930 that says just this.
I’m also wondering if Knockan on the 1861 census might be Knockban?

If anyone who helped with the original query is still here I’d very much appreciate it, or any anyone with any fresh ideas or suggestions?
Thanks in advance, JazzaD  :)
