In researching the family tree, we have found a conundrum. My Great great great grandmother has 2 surnames, depending on which side of the family you talk to.
We believe that she was born
SARAH ANN ROUND
Mar 28 1813 Dudley, Worcestershire, England
July 31 1875 (at age 62) Wellington, Nth Island, New Zealand
Married @ St Thomas in Dudley 20/4/1829
JOSEPH HUGHES
1810 Dudley, Worcester, England
Circa Aug 29 1840 (at age ~30) Dudley, Worcestershire, England
They had a daughter ANN ISABELLA HUGHES
12 August 1830 Greater London
14 August 1903 Kaikoura New Zealand.
Sarah then married
MICHAEL COLEY
Born 1813 - England.
We have no more information on Michael apart from that he could be known as John, but on the Bernicia passenger list he is Michael.
There are records of Sarah and Michael Coley travelling to New Zealand on the Bernicia, leaving Downs on 10 July 1848, arriving in Nelson NZ on 1848. There is also Anne Hughes on the same ship. She was 17 year of age. Michael and Sarah also had a child travelling with them called Isabella, but no age mentioned.
ANN ISABELLA HUGHES was apparently a Quaker in London and converted to Catholicism when she Married GEORGE JOSEPH CHAPMAN 9/7/1849 at St Michaels Anglican Church, Waimea West, Nelson , NZ
Now, the other side of the family are saying that Ann Isabella's name is ANN ISABELLA NIXON (HUGHES) There has been much speculation for many generations. There are thoughts that her name was Nixon, Hickson, Hughes or Coley,
There are talks that Ann Isabella was christened at the St George's in Middlesex. (2139) - 1/2/1831
giving birth date of 12/8/1830. Daughter of JOHN and SARAH NIXON Back Lane, in Tower Hamlets, Borough of St George, East Parish County, Middlesex.
