Fermanagh / Looking for the final 2x Great Grandmother
« on: Saturday 19 March 22 12:18 GMT (UK)  »
Quite new to this and just starting with my Irish ancestors, but can't seem to find my 2x Great Grandmother and would appreciate any insights from the community. She was the wife (I assume) of Samuel Patterson who may have lived in Ferney. Samuel had a daughter in 1852, Anne Patterson, who married Robert Pursley in 1872 and they had several children. I can't seem to find any extended information on Samuel Patterson, or anything at all on Anne mother.  ???

Any leads from those experienced in looking at records from this place and time would be great.

Hi

Joseph being record at his grandmother doesn't mean he didn't get on with his stepfather he might just have gone to visit her for the weekend.

Benjamin is interesting; he married & went to Lancashire & then Middlesex but he married his second wife at Lockwood.

John

Hi John,

Good point, rookie mistake to get absolutist about where someone is counted at the time of the census. I need to remember that it is just a snapshot.

I think he is the James Sykes born Greetland 1809 & baptised at a Halifax Non-Con in 1809 son of Josepgh & Frances Sykes.

John

Hi John,

I will drill down on this couple and see what I can find. The Marriage Bond might help as well when it comes.

Thanks again for your assistance.

As the marriage was by Licence, it might be an idea to obtain a copy of the Bond and Allegation.  Ages given on the transcript suggest that James is 23, and Margaret is 24.

I made this same suggestion on your thread looking for Margaret Dyson  :)

Hi,

Thanks for your help. I have ordered the Marriage Bond, quite a slow process though.

Hi

Had a quick look.

It seems Margaret Sykes nee Dyson married a Joseph Wainwright in 1847 at Almondbury.

It looks from the census she was born in 1808 at Lockwood, Huddersfield.

So it appears James Sykes died before 1847, they seem to be in the Almondbury area so you could look for a burial for him there.

John

Hi John,

This and your later discovery helps to build a bit of a story. My guess is Joseph was not a fan of his step-father. Thanks for your efforts.

Nothing on telly so I have had another look.

I would say your James Sykes was buried 8 April 1842 aged 32 at Lockwood.

They are in the 1841 census in Lockwood with 2 children; Joseph & Benjamin.

Joseph Sykes was born 15 September 1835 at Lockwood and baptised at Lockwood but the transcription as him born 1825. He is in the 1851 census living with his grandmother Margaret Dyson and she was born 1773 in Mirfield.

John

Well, I'm glad there was nothing on the telly because that was very useful. I have been looking in other places for this info the last few days and found some of it, but this confirms what I have found and I had not seen the burial info on James or the 1851 census, so thanks for putting me on to those.

Yorkshire (West Riding) Lookup Requests / Looking for a link to James Sykes Parents
« on: Thursday 10 March 22 12:41 GMT (UK)  »
James was a very popular name among the Sykes of Huddersfield and surronds. I know that my James was born in 1809 and lived in Elland before he married Margaret Dyson in 1832, but I have nothing that links him to any other person in his family of origin and there are plenty of contenders for his parents.

Are the wizards of genealogy able to divine another relative or provide any wisdom about how to focus my search?

What an amazing resource. I am only at the early stages of this journey, but I am so glad I found this site and a huge thank you all for you speedy and willing responses. I have learnt so much just from this first post and I do think I have found the right Margaret Dyson whose first child, a boy, was named Joseph also (my 2x-great-grandfather) obviously a favorite brother of hers. Next trip to the UK is going to be busy!  :o

Trying to determine which Margaret Dyson married James Sykes in Almondbury on 5 August 1832.

I know that Margaret's birth is estimated as 1808 in the 1841 census. I can only find 2 birth  records for Margaret Dyson in the area around that time. One was born 1807 in Huddersfield and the other in 1805 in Almondbury. There is nothing in the records associated with my Margaret that indicates the name of any other family member, so I am stumped.  ???

If anyone has any ideas of how I could move this forward or access to records that could provide further information, I would be very grateful of the assistance.
