There's a Constance Florence Atward born in Croydon district (reg Q1 1905) and baptised 01 Apr 1924 in Dewsbury but born 23 Apr 1904, mother Florence (sw)

This has been puzzling me what was the reason for the late baptism (20 years later)

Constance Florence Atward born 23 Apr 1904

Baptism All Saints Dewsbury on    1 Apr 1924

Would her mother Florence have been present?

Was it her address West Croydon ?

Were these details given by Constance or somebody else ?

It's a shame it's only a transcript and not the original

Yes, I wondered why she was baptised 20 years later. The birth date on her birth certificate is 23 November rather than April too 🤔

I suggested a possible explanation for date anomaly in reply #8.
I suspect Constance may have been handed over to adoptive parents at a very young age before Florence had had her baptised, but adoptive parents thought she already had been.

Ah yes, I see that now. I wonder, would you have had to have been baptised in order to marry then?

Thanks everyone for all your help! I'd have had nowhere near as many leads without you! I have another illegitimate Great Grandmother that I may need help with in the future too 😊

That's interesting to know that she was with Fred and Fanny Goodaire in 1921. The fact that she is moving around the family makes me wonder if the Bycrofts were related to Florence Atward? Maybe it would explain a reason for the move up North where as far as the records and family recollection show, is where Constance stayed for the rest of her life.
Thanks for the Croydon adoption links, I'll have to have a look into these 😊
I will have another look at the birth certificate for any more clues.

There is a Florence Annie Attwood listed as living at 56 Linnell Road in Camberwell on the 1911 Census. Born in 1883 which would have made her 21 at the time Constance was born. Wonder if this could be the same person? In 1911 she's listed as single and living at home with her parents and brother.

The address on the certificate is 8 Kemble Road, Waddon. Florence is listed as a domestic servant.

That's a point Kloumann, maybe she wasn't formally adopted but just taken in by a family?

Yes Ladyhawk, that is the document I found

Thanks so much for the responses.
My Great Grandmother was Constance Florence Atward as a few of you have noted and she was born 23rd November 1904. Her mother is named as Florence Atward on the birth certificate and it's Florence I'm trying to dig further on. I know Constance Florence had been adopted by the age of 6 so they won't be listed together any census' after this. Thanks again😊

I'm looking to dig further into my great, great Grandmother. I know she had an 'illegitimate' daughter in 1904 and that she later had her adopted. I don't have a year of birth for the mother but I know her name was Florence Atward as that is what it said on the 1904 birth certificate? Any help to dig deeper on a trail gone cold? TIA
