The Common Room / Re: British Newspaper Archive subscription question

My understanding is that they both access the same scanned material and optical character recognition results, but use different search engines to find things, with the FindMyPast search tool being slightly better in my opinion.

The white band makes it highly likely he's Coldstream Guards

Castleton Road is close to Goodmayes Station so that was probably where he was born.

He was born 12 Sep 1906 (not 1907 as stated on his death registration) in Goodmayes, Essex. He was the only son of Richard Robert and Mary Faulkner Fowell. At the time of the 1911 census the family were at 91 Castleton Road, Redbridge, Essex. His father's occupation was coal salesman. In the 1939 Register, they are still at 91 Castleton Road. Richard junior is single and a professional musician.
He married Doris L Allen in Q2 1964. The marriage was registered in Ilford. Richard and Doris do not appear to have had any children. Presumably his wife went by her middle name.

On the subject of Thomas Henry Oliver's commissioning, The Gazette shows him as appointed 2Lt in the Manchester Regiment with seniority from 27 Feb 1918. Source: London Gazette published 3 Apr 1918, Supplement 30608, page 4074.

Just to confirm, the soldiers and officer in the photograph are all Royal Engineers. This tends to suggest that it does not feature Thomas Oliver.

World War Two / Re: Merchant Navy Reserve Pool Records
« on: Monday 27 May 24 10:53 BST (UK)  »
From my understanding, he would have been paid a retainer while he was in the Reserve Pool, so maybe this was a way to give him a small 'pension' while he was unfit for service at sea. He had the right to refuse service twice, before being required to join the third ship to which he was allocated by the pool, but maybe he had a someone acting as his guardian angel to ensure that the third allocation never occurred? Otherwise I can't see how he would have been accepted for the Pool if he was classed as unfit for further service. Alternatively, perhaps the standard for fitness was lowered after 1941 as the MN became more desperate for men to replace those lost at sea.

World War Two / Re: Brigade Rest Camp Holland 1945

In this case, yes the brigade that 109 HAA Regt formed part of was an artillery brigade of mixed anti-aircraft capabilities. However, exactly what the Brigade Rest Camp was and who sponsored it is unclear. Troops were taken out of the order of battle when the operational pace eased off, for a chance to get some rest and recreation (R&R). By the spring of 1945, the Luftwaffe was virtually out of action on the Western Front so there would have been less need for Allied anti-aircraft defences.

Hi Brewins Girl,
No need to apologise, I'm glad to help.
109 Heavy Antiaircraft was a regiment in the Royal Artillery You can read a bit more about them here (that one lists the brigades the Regiment was attached to) and here (the second one has some discussion about the unit in April 1945, which may or may not be relevant to your query).
If you want to see the unit's war diaries, (either for the whole period of hostilities or just the period you know your man was with them) they are at TNA: https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/browse/r/h/C96797 Unfortunately they aren't yet digitised so it would need an in-person visit.
