Thanks - its the different areas of coverage I'm asking about - if there is any gap analysis for example as to which sites have better coverage of years/parishes for example.

I'm looking at Surrey/Middlesex, and was trying to see what gaps different sites had in their records, but before I went too far, thought someone else may have done it and didn't want to re-invent the wheel!

I can't see if this has been asked before - but there are various sites both free and paid which offer access to Parish Registers. Has there been any comparison done on which has the best coverage, or is it a case of having to check through each one? I'm asking as I've seen a few results which appear on one site but not another, and want to make sure if I am paying for something that I am paying for one which is likely to give the most coverage!

Surrey / Re: Deaths of John and Mary Dawson

Thanks maddys52 - sadly, no idea of occupation. His son is apprenticed to a tailor, and another becomes a linen draper, so that may point towards him being linked to those trades, but another son becomes a plater/guilder and so it could be co-incidence that two are involved in the tailoring/cloth trade.

I've checked the census and they are not with the children in 1841 as far as I can see - but the children scatter, and can't find all of them. With birth dates of 1755 & 1757, I imagine they die before the 1841 census.

The other problem is they are so close to London, there are a lot of John Dawson's around and I'm at a loss for ways to narrow it down!

Surrey / Deaths of John and Mary Dawson
« on: Tuesday 07 February 23 11:20 GMT (UK)  »
Morning all,

I've hit a bit of a brick wall looking for two death records on the Parish Registers. Not sure if this is down to migration, not looking in the right places, or insufficient records / poor transcription, but hoping someone might be able to suggest a few things to help.

I have John Dawson, born in Walton-on-Thames in 1755, and Mary Jones, born in Chertsey in 1757. They marry in Chertsey in 1778, and then have a number of children there: Thomas (1779), John (born and died 1781), William (1782), James (1784), John (born and died 1787), then they move to Woking, where Mary is born 1790, and Richard in 1792.

I then see Thomas (born 1779) becoming an apprentice in Woking in 1794, and that's it.

I can't see the death of either John or Mary in Woking, or Surrey in my searches, and when widening out to surrounding counties, there are too many possibles. Their children drift towards Epsom and London, but this doesn't narrow anything down.

Does anyone have any suggestions, or are there known gaps in the Parish Records that have been digitised that mean I might need to go to the hard records to search?

I wonder if this might be his death?

William Charles Dawson, aged 46 (which would match approximately with his age given in 1871)
1st q 1877, St Saviour Southwark, 1d 70.

Which fits with this burial, (strangely) in Finchley 'for the Parish of St Mary Islington':

William Charles Dawson, aged 46, 55 Pollock Street, New Kent Road, Southwark, buried 3rd April 1877.

It would also fit with him then appearing as deceased in the 1877 Marriage Cert, but not before - his children must have kept in touch to an extent. Amazing!

Looks like he did a runner? And he's lopped several years off his age.

1871 census

RG10/803/10/11

In the household of Mary Isaac, High Street Esher

Charles W Dawson, lodger, married, 42, House Painter, Newcastle on Tyne.
Matilda do, wife,  married, 30,  Lancashire, Liverpool,

Amazing! There is a story behind that - name change, age change and legged it down south - will probably never know but really appreciate the help - I'd hit a dead end but this looks like there is a whole load more to find out there - really kind of you all to help!

Thanks - funnily enough one of the children emigrates in 1880 which I thought might be triggered by Mary's death as she is missing from the 1881 Census, but I'd assumed due to their ages they were dead, not thought about re-marriage... will look into that!

Thanks Jim, I've used that, which narrows things down, but due to the timescales (10 years) there are an awful lot of people with those names. I've checked a few by ordering certificates, but then had to rule them out. There are still a lot, hence trying to see if there are other avenues to try!

So for Mary for example, between 1871 and 1882, there were 19 women of that name died with a similar DoB - I've kept wiggle room of 2 years to make sure I cast a wider net for age variation.

For William, its about 38 names, and he could also have gone by the name Charles...
