Roscommon / Need help searching Roscommon Baptism records
« on: Sunday 11 February 24 18:59 GMT (UK)  »
I would humbly appreciate help locating the baptism records of the following ancestors.  They were all born in Carrogarve, Tibohine, Civil District of Fairymount, Rural District of Castlerea, in Roscommon County.

I'm not necessarily asking someone here to do the research FOR me, but if you can help me understand how to do the research myself, that would be very useful to me.

All of these people are the Catholic children of Patrick Niland/Neilan and Margaret Giblin of Carrogarve:

-- Mary Margaret Neilan/Niland, born 1845 or 1846;

-- Michael Neilan/Niland, born 1846;

-- Patrick and Marian (Maren? Marie? illegible) Neilan, twins born abt. 1856.

Alternate spellings of Niland might be Nylan, Neilan, Nilon...

None of these people died in Ireland, if that helps.

Thanks in advance for any help.

It's much better to use the "Attachments and other options" image insertion rather than 'PostImage', which often cannot be viewed.
Thank you!  I will remember this for next time.

I'm astonished by the fast and accurate information that I'm getting at this site.  You are all so kind and so knowledgeable.  I'm new here, and so far it's been a true pleasure.

WOW!  How on earth did you do that!?? I'm so impressed!

... and so very grateful.  Thank you!  Knowing the names of the godparents is extremely helpful!

What could "of a humble family" mean?  Humble in temperament or humble in financial condition?

Roscommon / Need help reading 1793 Roscommon baptism records

Hello, it's me again, humbly asking for help.

I believe I have found the baptism records for my GGGGrandmother, Winifred Crane.  I'm thrilled that I found the information -- and I can read enough of the Latin to read her parents' names -- Martin Cryan and Maria Mullany -- but I can't decipher the rest of the entry.

This is copied from Ireland, Catholic Parish Registers, 1655-1915, Elphin Boyle, 1793-1827.  The date of baptism is 14 October 1793; page 12 of 190; the entry is on the right page, second from the bottom.

I wish I could read it, but the handwriting is ... well ... I need help.

Let's see if I can post a snip image ...

Yes, thanks, that original post was written by me.  The replies were very helpful, but now I'm trying to move backwards another generation.

Roscommon / Winifred Crane (Cryan? Creghan?) of Carrogarve, Roscommon, b. ca 1790

Looking for Winifred Crane (Cryan? Creghan?) Giblin of the townland Carrogarve, County Roscommon, b. ca 1790.

She appears on the death certificate of Margaret (Giblin) Niland -- Winifred is Margaret's mother.  Margaret was born in Carrowgarve, Roscommon, about 1815, and so I'm looking there for her mother Winifred.  The Niland (Neilon) family and the Giblin family were all in the same Carrogarve neighborhood for a very long time, but I cannot find a Winifred in their midst.

Her daughter's 1914 death certificate transcribes Winifred's maiden name as "Crane", but I am guessing this is a "write what you hear" situation, so I'm not sure how to spell it as I wander through the records.  Crahan? Cryan, Creghan?

I've looked through the Applotments and the Griffiths.  Anyone have any idea where to look next?

Thanks in advance...

Alan and Gaffey --

Thank you so much!  The information you gave me brings me closer to understanding my ancestors' journey.  As always, I now have more work to do, to try and unravel the timeline... but that's the fun part, right?

Again, thank you both so very much for being so generous with your time and expertise.  Much appreciated!

Roscommon / Giblins and Nilands (Neilans) in Carrowgarve, Tibhine, Roscommon
« on: Friday 27 October 23 18:05 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to learn more about my ancestors in Carrowgarve (Carrowgariff), Tibohine, Roscommon.

Specifically, want to learn more about the marriage of Patrick Neilan (Niland) and Margaret Giblin.  I have solid family evidence that they were both from Carrowgarve.

I have found both family names on the Irish Tithe Applotment for Carrowgariff, Roscommon, AND Griffith's Valuation.  I now know which tenant farm plots were leased by the Nilands and the Giblins.
They lived very near each other, which is exciting -- BUT there are several families of each name in Carrowgarve, so I don't know exactly how the families are related.  (Everyone seems to be named Thomas and James and Michael and Patrick, lol.)  I hope I'm being clear, although I fear I'm not...

Patrick Niland (Neilan? Neilon?) was born about 1810, and died after 1863.  He might have migrated to the UK, but he never immigrated to the US.  I would love to know who his parents are.

Patrick married Margaret Giblin, born in November, 1819 (year of birth), died April 13, 1914 in Meriden, CT, USA. She and Patrick had four children:  Thomas Anthony (b.1850 in Wolverhampton, UK); James John (b. 1852 in Carrogarve); Marcella (b. 1861 in Carrowgarve); Margaret (b. 1863, possibly in the UK).  Patrick Niland died sometime after 1863.  Margaret Giblin Niland and her children all immigrated to US at various dates in the 1880s.

Specifically, want to learn more about the marriage of Patrick Neilan (Niland) and Margaret Giblin and their parents' names.   Can anyone help me to know where I might find birth and marriage records for Carrogarve, Roscommon during that time period?

Thanks for any help!
