In FreeBMD:
Ernest R Neale married Betty R Goady, Leicester, Jun quarter 1946
Certificate would give an address and age.

There are 3 deaths of an Ernest R Neale in other places between 1977-1992, all of which give a date of birth.  (Reading, Nuneaton, Norwich)

Does any of this fit your person?
(Amended)

Try searching photos here.  "Longley Lane" finds some of the large houses.

James Kennedy is indexed in http://www.sheffieldindexers.com/ as being in the Burgess Rolls at Piper Lane, Brightside, 1855, with a qualifying property, a house.  (See Directories section)

This map is 1890, it shows a few large houses where he may have worked.
Also shows the Union Workhouse, now Northern General Hospital.

Piper Lane/Houses are shown toward the SE corner of this map, this is near the northern edge of Sheffield.  Brightside Bierlow was one of the 6 townships comprising the parish of Sheffield.  (The word bierlow means township.)

Added: Longley Lane still exists, the line of Piper Lane has become part of Herries Road (A6102) which is a spine road through 20th century housing across the north of the city.

World War Two / Re: Black Troops during WW2 in Britain

My father was in the RAF and at some point had a conversation with some USAF officers.  They were very dismissive of black personnel in their forces.  The British officers were not impressed by their attitude.

Note that there are some errors in the original, including a few incorrectly declared dates of birth

RC uncovered an interesting example of this recently.  See reply #26 at the foot of this page. https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=880113.18     and #30, next page.

There is a 15 year discrepancy, which was officially amended in 1942.  This person's wife and family had evacuated from London to Luton.  He remained, living in a pub which had managed to copy an entirely incorrect date on to the form.  It was officially amended when he became a patient in a Luton hospital.

What is interesting is the last line, the different ways Ancestry and Findmypast dealt with this.  I think Findmypast was probably wiser, leaving it blank, so you would check the entry just in case.

I studied geography, so place is very important.  I often find myself checking profiles for place and being disappointed there is no entry.  Place may affect the way I reply to a question.

I am from the West Riding, which covers a lot of ground, from the East Midlands to Westmorland.  There will not be many of us left who can say they once worked for the West Riding County Council!

Robert's father's side of the family seems to come to an end.

One brother: Richard William, who married Nellie Louise Norris 1896.  No children found.
He died 1905, she remarried 1910.  I have the details if required.
