Haven't had a chance to respond until now!
I have done a DNA test but no luck with finding anyone with a Taylor relative born in New Byth, let alone a surgeon in their tree yet!
I also reached out to Scotlands People and the Scottish Indexes and they mentioned the following
- RCE records
- Paternity indexes
- Diet books
- Kirk session records
They said RCE records are only available after 1855, in the paternity indexes that year/place is not yet indexed, the diet books will cost about £30-£240 to search with no guarantees of finding anything as it might be filed in the wrong year and I checked the Kirk sessions which you also mentioned above which they recommended as well but didn't find anything.
So the best options at the moment are diet books or as you suggested attempting to build out Taylor trees from the region and hoping a DNA match pops up.
