You may also need to factor in the risk that your nan may somehow learn of this from somebody else and not you.  Theres a lot less thoughtful people than you out there on DNA platforms.

Its my understanding that all intestate cases would eventually go through Bona Vacantia and that is the bread and butter of professonal heir Hunters.  However some cases can be preempted and notified to Heir Hunters first, prior to HMG, by lawyers, councils, neighbours and other interested parties

Suggest you contact the HMG Bona Vacantia Dept within the Government Legal department (gov.uk/government/organisations/bona-vacantia)

I imagine that Heir Hunters earn their penny in convincing HMG that the identified heirs are indeed legitimate heirs!!  And I also wonder how undocumnted DNA based heirs work - no documents just a shared CM number!!

Good luck!!

The Common Room / Re: Documenting a House History
« on: Thursday 30 May 24 18:13 BST (UK)  »

Many thanks all.  I think a "standard" report is the only way forward and thats fine as I write for a living.  I have always loved the extremely rigourous structure and connectivity of a family tree and was wondering if there was something like that appropriate here but I dont think so.

My one hour's research this afternoon has unveiled a former Governor of Gibraltar and "the finest puppetress in the country" as previous residents!!

Not sure we'd make A House Through Time though as I havent yet discovered any rampant British colonialism or any other British misdeeds!!

The Common Room / Documenting a House History
« on: Wednesday 29 May 24 23:36 BST (UK)  »

Just moved into a 160 year old house, complete with a full set of deeds whose previous occupants include a VC Winner, an Olympic medallist, a Test cricketer as well as several bounders and senior military fellows. I am therefore intererested in properly researching and documenting the house's history.

I am reasonably confident in gleaning all the information thats out there but am wondering if there is any dedicated means of recording it all systematically - like a family tree - apart from by established means such as spreadsheets or WORD type documents etc.

Many thanks, as always

Dont worry, youre not being picked on!!  As we all know common sense is not so common!!

Our modern society finds it easier to just say no to everything including any advice on genealogical matters.  Anything else requires thought, effort and risk

The Common Room / Re: Relationships In An Ancestry Public Tree
« on: Tuesday 07 May 24 14:46 BST (UK)  »
The precise relationship is only stated after.you program it in yourself  ( by selecting the relationship) otherwise it will appear as 1-2nd cousin
Close relative
Or " distant relative"

For example ancestry can not tell which person is the child and which the parent if not linked to a tree

Indeed, but that isnt the question within the OP.  They merely need to ascertain relationships within a given tree.  Now if only Ancestry allowed us to work that out for any 2 people instead of having to set various folks as the Home person!!!

On the "person screen", the relationship is stated to the Home Person
