Many of the old IRA members applied for an Irish military pension, to receive this they has to give an affidavit of their actions, these are available to view on line at the Irish national archive

The song the rising of the moon was about the 1798 rebellion and while the name Sean O'farrell is used I dont believe there are any specfic hostrical records about him. either it was a common name in the Longford area or possibly a name passed down by folklore.
Sean O'Farrell from Coalisland was murdered by the SAS at Clonoe Chapel on 16th February 1992 in an ambush after an attack on Coalisland RUC station.
There was an Elizabeth O'Farrell who was a member of Cumman na mBan and was present at the GPO during the Easter rising of 1916, she was a nurse and tended the wounded during the rising and also delivered messages between PH Pearse and the British while negioating the Volunteers surrender.
Would be interested to find out more about your grandfather as my mother was O'Farrell
