Thank you Jan B

I have just got the image from Scotlands people and seen it for myself. It has Margaret Potts Robson as deceased I think.

She wasn't as she is on the 1881 census.

Been searching for a George Potts or George Robson birth in Durham but too many Robsons and not enough Potts.

I have a record for "Margaret Potts or Robson" for 1859 who was born in November and christened in December. I think the Potts family was Catholic.

Hi patrizia

I have William Wealands Robson jnr on a distant branch of my family tree. I am related through his mother, Mary Shield.

I have done a bit of research on him. I was not aware that he had a son George.

I have found 2 sons from his first wife; the first son, Richard Preston Robson, who died shortly after birth and the second son Samuel Moore Robson and two daughters from Margaret Potts (prior to the 1869 marriage), Margaret and Annie.

Do you have a copy of George's 1879 marriage cert where he names WWR as his father and Margaret Potts as his mother? It must be a scottish marriage cert if it names a mother?

Cumberland Lookup Requests / Re: john snowdon b1791 cummersdale and hannah

Hello wilrob

Robert Lamb and Mary Nanson were my gg grandparents.

I have the Nansons on my family tree as I have the will of Robert and Mary's son, William Lamb, who left a bequest to "my Aunt Hannah Snowden of Upperby".

It was in tracing Hannah Snowden, that I found out she was the sister of Mary Nanson, my gg grandmother.

I am not related to the Snowdens but I am related to the Nansons.

I think that the marriage of Joseph Nanson to Mary TULL could perhaps be a mistranscription as almost all of the children's baptism show their mother as Mary FELL?

Other Countries / Re: Birthplce: M W G Khampur, India. Meaning please?
« on: Friday 29 November 13 05:20 GMT (UK)  »
On the image for the 1901 census the birthplace is written as "India (MWP)".

It looks to me like the last letter is not a g, but a p partly obscured by the bracket.

Whoever was collating the statistics has used the final column for the birthplaces of all those on the page who were not born in England and that is where the word "Khampor" appears.

On the 1891 census image, the birthplace for Helen is "North West Provinces" India.

In this case, wikipedia is your friend:)

If you search on wikipedia for Cawnpore it will tell you Cawnpore was the British word for what is now spelled Kanpur.
If you search wikipedia using the terms "North-Western Provinces" India you will find an old map where the spelling of the current Kanpur was Khanpur at the time the map was drawn.

I am assuming therefore that MWG is actually NWP and someone got mixed up with M and N - and ancestry transcribed P as G.

The above is either an educated guess or pure speculation! It's your call.

The Lighter Side / Re: Found out some bad things about Hubby's ancestors
« on: Tuesday 13 August 13 19:37 BST (UK)  »
I had been researching my ancestors and just couldn't get my kids or my neices and nephews interested in family history. All I got was the eye rolls and yawns and mutterings along the line of "all you care about is dead rellies".

Then I asked them "What would it take to get you interested in your family history?

They replied "find us a criminal"

So I spent hours on the black sheep ancestors site, the Old Bailey site, the list of people hanged in Uk, the Australian convict lists, the list of Chartists who were punished, etc etc. No ancestors there.

Finally, when the British Newspapers site came online I found an 1848 article about my ggg grandparents being charged with receiving stolen goods(to wit one roll of damask) at the local police courts.

I proudly announced this to my kids and neices and nephews who were quite delighted.

Then I found the case had been heard at the subsequent quarter session and they were acquitted

My kids and neices and nephews were actually disappointed and lost all further interest in their family history.

There's got to be a lesson in there: I'm just not quite sure what it is!
