Essex Lookup Requests / 1861/71 Essex Census Help - Johnson
« on: Tuesday 19 August 08 22:17 BST (UK)  »
Could anyone help me find John Johnson, wife Sarah and family. John was born in Finchingfield in 1826 and would have been living in Great Bardfield, Sampford or Finchingfield in 1861/71. I have them in 1881 census but do not have access to any earlier - trying to establish all their children.

Appreciate any help to get extract for 1861 and/or 1871 census.

Thanks
John

Hi,

Good point, sorry you did suggest that earlier.

No luck - the witnesses were Aaron Prevett and Kate Prevett, Marian's (William's wife) father and sister.

Regards

Yes,

I have his marriage certificate - he married Marian Prevett, St Nicholas, Brighton 1906, his age says 28 and his father was William (deceased).

But as I've said there are no records for a William Godley, born 1878 with father William in Brighton. His 1904 discharge papers say born 1878, Brighton.

Hence my thought that maybe he lied about his age - his death cert. says age 71 - he died in 1951 therefore 1880?

I have not record of his mother - only an old relative who said she was known as 'Miss Winder', but she re-married several times, I guess after William's (Snr) death.

The only William Godley born 1878, Nr Brighton (Up Beeding) I can trace is a William Henry Godley, but his father wasn't William and he and my William both appear in the 1901 census. Mine at Dover in 1st Royal Sussex Reg. again confirming his DOB and place as 1878, Brighton.

Appreciate any help.

Hi,

Thanks for the quick response, I've never been able to find his birth details for 1878 and my guess is he lied about his age, hence my request.

I know he joined the 1st Royal Sussex Reg. and served in the Boer War.

Guess I've drawn a blank, unless his father did die before 1891 and he was adopted - perhaps by Dan Goddard?

I'll have to keep investigating this one. If anyones got any ideas appreciate their advice.

Hi,

Thanks for the quick response, I have him for 1901 in Dover in the 1st Royal Sussex regiment - I know he served in the Boer War (I have his discharge papers). I've never been able to find his birth details for 1878 and my guess is he lied about his age, hence my request.

In 1891 he would have been around 10 years old and born in Brighton. His father was also William if around in 1891 (I know he died before 1906).

Appreciate any help.

Thanks

 Hi,
Can anyone with access to the 1891 census help to find a William Godley (not William Henry Godley, b.1878 Up Beeding), Sussex perhaps Brighton or surrounding villages - I have asked before (years ago) but I have reason to believe his DOB may be 1880 or 1881, I think his father was also William, but he died some time before 1906 so he may not be showing in 1891.

Appreciate if someone could help.

Hi Carole,

Thanks for the info.,  it may be him but  from the only  actual info. I have suggests he was born around 1878 - marriage cert. says age 28 in 1906.

I don't know his actual birth date, I don't know his mothers first or maiden name only that she married several times and was known as Ms Winder. I know his fathers name was William and was deceased by 1906. I do know he was in the Royal Army Medical Corp. and was a stretcher bearer in the Boer War. There is a rumor that his father was a Major in the Army.

I've been trying for years to sort this, I guess the only way of finding actually where he was born (which seems to be the key) is when the census info for 1911 is released.

Regards

John

Hi,

Just browsing and noticed I have a stretched link to your tree via Isabella Bragg (my great grand father Joseph's sister) who married Henry Harkness (date?). Their daughter Martha Bragg Harkness (b.1885) married Jacob Daglish (b.?) in 1904. Their Daughter Martha Bragg Daglish (b?) married William Matterson i have a date of 25/01/1933. I know they had at least one daughter called Gwendoline in 1934.

I have more info that my be of interest to your tree. If you have dates for the '?' above I'd appreciate them.

Regards

John
