Antrim / Re: Solitude (house)
« on: Friday 01 April 16 13:05 BST (UK)  »
thank you so very much i have learnt a bit more about my family .does anyone know where aln gardner brown and family would have gone to school or worked as young lads maybe as errand boys

Unrelated to your family however James Stuart of Armagh (1764-26 Sep 1840) lived at the Solitude house - he was Editor of the Belfast Newsletter in 1821, then partnered with Fortescue Greg to publish The Guardian and Constitutional Advocate paper in 1827. He came to Belfast via Armagh (his birthplace) and Newry, where he was the first Editor of The Newry Commercial Telegraph (12 Nov 1812-1821) and also published Historical Memoirs of Armagh (1819). His parents were Benjamin Bassenet Stuart and Jane Ogle of Armagh (Jane may explain the reference earlier in this thread to Henry Ogle living at Solitude in 1824 - haven't tied him in to the rest of the family yet).
Hope this helps
Jim
Update If you check the Lennon Wylie website for their Lost Church leaflets (see http://www.lennonwylie.co.uk/LostChurchLeaflets.htm you will find that the Brown Family donated a Holy Table - accompanying notes are: "John Gardner Brown, M.A., and his family, in memory of his grandfather, John Brown, Esq., of Peter's Hill and Solitude, and of his father, John Brown, M.A., sometime Curate of St. Anne's"

Anyone know much about the Ogles before them?

Hi
I'm not related, however I've been researching the merchant families of Newry and the surrounding area on and off for several years now, so have certainly encountered the Ogles. I can't help with Isaac Walker's eventual demise, however as to his siblings:

1.   Margaret Ogle (c1842). Margaret died on 18 Dec 1865 at Bangor. Probate was granted to her father Frederick of Victoria Place, Belfast on 11 Nov 1865
2.   Letitia Ogle (c1844) ?m.(1894 Belfast) Samuel ___. Letitia married Samuel Barr, a merchant and Justice of the Peace who lived at Claremont, County Londonderry. Samuel was a widower when he married Letitia on 7 Nov 1894. When he died in 1896 his Will (available online via PRONI) instructed his Trustees to pay any interests from his estate to Letitia during the rest of her natural life. She moved to Colwyn Bay in Wales and died there on 31st Dec 1917.
3.   Frederick Ogle (c1846 Belfast), commission agent, Australia, m.(1875 London?) Adelaide Lammese. 5 or 6 children?. Frederick was born on 15th Aug 1847, and married Adelaide Louisa Lammerse in 1879
4.   Francis Robert Ogle (c1847) m.(1878 Belfast) Elizabeth ___. Francis Robert married Elizabeth Campbell at Trinity Church, Belfast on 13 Jul 1878, and died just under 3 years later on 6 Jul 1881
5.   Isaac Walker Ogle (c1849).
6.   Sarah Ogle (c1851). Sarah married John McIlveen, a linen merchant, on 19 Feb 1874 in Belfast; they had 5 daughters
7.  John Hardy Ogle. Born 1841, died 9 Aug 1870 at 116 Chichester Place, Belfast

Frederick (1814-13 Sep 1869) was the son of John Ogle, (1772 Newry-17 Nov 1831 Dublin), a solicitor, and his wife Isabella Walker (1784-26 Mar 1848). I have additional information on the Ogles which I'm happy to share - have PM'd you my details.

Best Regards
Jim

Armagh / Re: Annaclare Scotts

.....I would be interested in any information about earlier generations at Annaclare or about the Armagh Cousers. My mother's maiden name was Couser and her father was  Herbert about whom I know nothing.....

Hi Michael

My Great Grandmother was a Couser from Cavanacaw Townland in Armagh. Herbert Couser married Elizabeth Adelaide Scott in 1899 in Rostrevor, County Down, however his family were from Killynure Townland in Armagh.

I'll send you a PM.

Best Regards

Hi there,  I think I can help with the Cousers from Armagh. My great, great grandmother was Anne Jane Allison married to John James Couser in Burt Parish Church co Donegal.....

Hi LRussell

Anne Jane Allison was my Great Grandmother too(!) - I'm descended from her daughter Sarah May "Minnie" Couser (b1870 Cavanacaw, Armagh), who married William John Linden on 4 Jan 1897 in Coatbridge - they then returned to Rostrevor. I'll send you a PM with my mail address in case you would like to share family information.

Best Regards
Jim

Hi

In your earlier post you asked about information on Page 228 of the RSJ Clarke book. This is in the Appendix and describes Old Age Pension Census Search Forms which can be used as a substitute for the destroyed 1841 and 1851 Census's. There are two entries for "Desert" as a townland - one for "Hanna (Reid)" and one for "Hanna". The National Archives of Ireland reference for both is CEN/S/8/1048. The Public Records Office of Northern Ireland (PRONI) also has holdings of these forms - the PRONI reference is T550. Suggest you check with NAI whether they can supply a photocopy.

From your latest post you have already checked the 1901 and 1911 Census records, however I found a record for a Joseph Hanna and sisters Margaret Jane and Mary, all born Dysart, living in Postley Place, Newry North Urban, these may be relations (see http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Down/Newry_North_Urban/Postley_Place/1247399/).

Hi Gill

I realise this is off-topic, however you may be interested to know there was a family called Thompson who owned a 526 acre park (Greenwood Park) in between Narrow Water and Newry, from the ealry 1800s until around 1884, when Margaret Thompson died. It is possible that Samuel Alexander may have been of this family if they knew the Halls of Narrow Water, and because Margaret's husband Ross Thompson had five sons - and I've only traced four.....

Happy to provide further information.

Hi

There is a thread on the OldWarrenpointForum site (see http://www.oldwarrenpointforum.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=9619) which covers the Mayne family.
