The Common Room / School in Felixstowe
« on: Friday 17 May 24 10:21 BST (UK)  »
I am doing some research for a friend. In the '1939 England & Wales Register' for the Felixstowe area the Old Felixstowe House School is listed along with a list of some of the boys attending the school. This is the only reference I can find to the school. It is presumably a private school. I have looked through the pages of the register immediately before and after the relevant page in the hope that I might find a helpful street name, but to no avail. If anybody wants to take a look for themselves you can enter 'John S. Doyle', DOB 18th August 1930 in the register (Ancestry). I would appreciate any help.

Lanarkshire / Maternity hospital

Hi, I am trying to trace a maternity hospital in Glasgow (closed now I expect). It was private I think and was located along Claremont Terrace. I know that it was operating until at least the mid 1960s. All help much appreciated.

The Common Room / Adoption
« on: Sunday 05 May 24 08:47 BST (UK)  »
I have a question about adoption. Would it have been common in the 1920s/1930s for a child born in Scotland to be adopted by a couple living in England? I presumed that there would be plenty of people in Scotland wanting to adopt and that they would have been given priority. Also, were the laws relating to adoption in England different to those of Scotland. Finally, if you were quite well off, could a ‘private’ adoption be arranged between two parties? Thanks in advance for any help in settling this issue.

Hi markw78,

Thanks for getting in touch. The map is very helpful. Apologies to Throth and Bleckie for not originally getting back in touch to thank you for your feedback. Usually I am very prompt with replies. Cannot think why I forgot to do so in your cases. I hang my head in shame.

Lancashire / Re: Vanished - William H. Sharratt and Elizabeth M. Sharratt
« on: Saturday 22 June 19 13:11 BST (UK)  »
I just cannot let go of this thread. It gets more convoluted the more I dig. Certain things I have been able to establish.

When William's first wife Elizabeth married for a second time in 1918 and claimed to be a widow, she was not telling the truth. Even though it states in the 1911 census that Elizabeth was still married, was it the case that William had already flown the coop (to use a rather quaint expression) by then? If, on the other hand, Elizabeth and William were still actually married (and it was just a case of William being out of the house when the census was taken), why all this malarky with the surname Moore instead of Wilson?

In the 1939 Register William is living with Mary Sherratt (who was born on 1 September 1855) and whose personal occupation is described as 'Unpaid domestic duties' (a euphemistic phrase for 'wife' judging by the register). I have been unable to find a marriage that fits the bill. Perhaps William did not decide to actually get married but simply maintained the pretence that he and Mary were man and wife. Although the birth date for Mary is very handy, I realise that there is virtually no chance of finding Mary's maiden name simply by cross referencing her first name with the birth date - needle in a haystack time, methinks! If anyone has any ideas how to progress further with my attempt to fill in William's 'lost' years I am open to any suggestions.

It would also be interesting to discover when William changed occupations from working in the mines to becoming a locomotive driver. I have noticed that there is a railway connection with the occupations of William's nephew John Halsall and also his father Richard Halsall.

Have had a reply from the museum in Clerkenwell. Unfortunately they have no information at all about Harry. I am now going to focus my attention on Lancashire. As with all things genealogical it really doesn't help when you are dealing with a very common name. Looking for a possible medical link I also checked on Ancestry to see if a Harry Smith served with the RAMC during the First World War but again, no joy. I will persevere!!
