Many thanks Elizabeth,

Anything you find out would be much appreciated.
I've been at a dead end regarding Robert for some time now.

Hi Louisa Maud,

That's exactly what I believe is the case here unfortunately. I thought it might be a worth a try to post here just in case someone might find something I've missed or have access to records I don't have.

Sarah was named as Woodman formally Gear on Walter Albert's birth certificate but I know that doesn't necessarily mean that she was married.

From my findings I also believe that Sarah's parents were Abraham & Ann. I'm not optimistic about being able to trace back from William James though. It's been a few years now that I've been looking.

Essex / A missing marriage??
« on: Monday 30 August 10 15:56 BST (UK)  »
Hi there,

I've been trying to find a marriage now for a long time between William James Woodman & Sarah Ann Gear. They were my 2x great grandparents & whilst I've been able to trace back from Sarah, William remains a dead end.

They had their fist child Sarah Matilda 18th Dec 1880, my great grandfather Walter Albert 4th Jun 1882 & then I believe 2 more sons Samuel & Jack.

On the 1881 census it states that William James Woodman was born c 1853 Southampton, Hampshire. I think it is highly likely that he is the William (James) Woodman registered at Boldre, Hampshire on the 1861 & 1871 census returns. Firstly he is no longer listed in Boldre in 1881 & second because his parents were Samuel & Sarah (I also seem to remember their being a brother called Walter - though I don't have access to Ancestry at the mo).

Sarah was from Plaistow,West Ham, Essex & they are living there on the 1881 census.

Obviously a record of there marriage (hopefully including father's names) would help no end though I am beginnning to think that maybe they never actually got officially married.

Many thanks to anyone that can help.

Hi there,

My Mum would like to help me with my reasearch & I'm thinking about possibly creating a website so that she can also access all the information I've already accumulated & add anything she might discover.

Can anyone tell me how easy it is to do so & how it is done. If I do create one I'd like it to be password protected.

I currently have all my records on FTM.

Many thanks for any help (though I'll warn you now that I do have a bit of a fear of computers :-/)

Hi Elizabeth,

Sorry it's taken me so long to reply. I haven't actually done any tree research for ages so I've had to do a bit of reading through stuff to get things straight in my head again. All my files were on my now very temperamental laptop but now I've transferred them I'm hoping to get back into things.

James did die in 1827 & is buried at Winchelsea (I'm wondering if even then it was a place to retire too). I've not been able to find his gravestone though Fisher's is there in very good condition (or is was when I last visited a few years ago)

I've not been able to find any record for Robert's burial. I bought a small book with Winchelsea burials in & coundn't find it. I've not been able to check Rye's. I did go to the Records Office some years back but didn't get so far back as Robert during the day.

The will that you talk of is for Robert Clark(e), miller & baker of Winchelsea. It mentions a wife Elizabeth, a son Robert & daughters Mary, Elizabeth & Hannah.

I really know nothing about Robert. Like you I have him & Mary as James' parents. Is it coinsidence that one of the above Robert's daughter's is Mary? Could Robert's wife Mary have died & he married her sister. Hence both Mary & Elizabeth seeming to have the same maiden name of Hoad - it's certainly a possibility but at this moment pure speculation. Or is he Robert's son & James' brother.

I'd appreciate any more information you might have on the Clark family. Maybe together me could shed some more light on things.

I was wondering if you could see if there was any info on the following please.

James Clark - born c1754 - died Rye or Winchelsea - buried Winchelsea 16th Nov 1827.
Mary Clark - born c1759 - died Rye or Winchelsea - buried Winchelsea 27th Jul 1828.

Robert Clark - died Rye or Winchelsea - unsure when he died but I believe he was alive in 1780. He was James' father if that helps.
Mary Clark - died Rye or Winchelsea - Roberts wife - sorry no more information.

Many thanks

Hi Elizabeth,

I have purchased the 1809 will of Robert Clark. I got it from the Acrchives website.

Still haven't  managed to figure out which Robert it actually belongs to though. I haven't really done any family tree research for quite a while. I seem to remember that Robert mentioned his wife Elizabeth in the will. I have his son James as probably having a mother named Mary so was wondering whether it was James' father's will or not. I seem to remember that James also possibly had a brother called Robert. It all gets a bit difficult when you get this far back doesn't it?

How are you related to Robert?

Liz
