The page for Birmingham on the Workhouses website says:

 Baptism registers (1864 onwards);

Thanks - as I suspected! I'll get in touch with them directly and see if a search can be made - thank you!  :)

Well I didn't like to presume ...!  ;)

I have her birth certificate, but the mother listed hasn't used her full name (presumably as her daughter was illegitimate), but instead just used one of her middle names and I'd like to confirm that the mother I think is hers actually is ...!

Mabel Winifred Lewis was born 18 March 1910 in the Birmingham Workhouse Infirmary (All Saints) and the mother given is May Lewis, but I believe she should be Beatrice May Victoria Lewis. I have Beatrice's birth and all census returns plus later marriage. She dies before the 1939 register. Mabel is on the 1911 in Musgrave Road and in 1939 is a patient in what was Birmingham Mental Hospital.

I was hoping her baptism (assuming she was baptised) would give her mother's full name and confirm what I think I know!

Thank you!

Warwickshire / Birmingham Baptisms ...?
« on: Thursday 21 September 17 19:17 BST (UK)  »
Hi All,

I was wondering if I could ask for some advice, please?! I am searching for a Birmingham baptism from 1910-1915. I have checked the transcriptions on Ancestry but the person isn't on there, but I doubt if Ancestry has all the baptisms of all the churches in Birmingham, or it may have taken place after 1912.

The child in question was born in the Birmingham Workhouse Infirmary in 1910, and in 1911 census she isn't listed as living with her parents, although she did later live with them.

I am not in a position to visit Birmingham myself, but are there any other online records that I could search, or would it be best to request a search be made via Birmingham Library?

Apologies for vagueness - happy to share info if required!

Many thanks!

Hi Chiddicks

Apologies - I haven't checked all your blogs, but you may wish to edit your first hyperlink to the YFT blog as the link is broken and you receive an error message when you click on it!

According to Genuki : Siston & Tormarton records are kept at the Bristol Records Office, not Gloucestershire Records Office.

::) That would explain it why they aren't included in the Gloucestershire PRs on Ancestry! I hadn't even thought about checking Genuki! Thank you  :)

Gloucestershire Lookup Requests / HOLBOROW Lookup in Siston PRs - BRISTOL ARCHIVES
« on: Friday 24 February 17 13:57 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All,

I was wondering if I could please request a lookup from the Siston parish registers directly at the Glos Bristol Archives? (For some reason neither Siston nor Tormarton are covered by the collection online at Ancestry.)

I am interested in mentions of the HOLBOROW/HOLBROW/HULBRO/HALBROW/etc family there. I believe a William Holborow was baptised there in 1742, along with his siblings Martha (1744), Daniel (1747) and Joseph (1750), all children of William and Elizabeth. I was wondering if there are any additional comments about the family (occupation, place of residence) or any additional branches of the family that may have been baptised, married or buried there.

Many thanks in advance.

Edit: Location amended!

Well hopefully I have saved Dom from needlessly spending money  :)   (but nothing else  :( )

cheers,
  Ros

And for that you have my eternal gratitude  ;)

Seriously though - thank you very much for doing the look-up and sending through the photos! No, it might not have given me what I wanted but its all grist to the mill and everyone loves a good mystery! Onward and upward and back with the thinking caps for Mr. H. His baptism at least must exist somewhere - and it may just not be online at the moment so I might have to get my butt to the Gloucestershire Record Office (luckily the Wiltshire Record Office is only a short drive away from where I live) and start trawling through PRs and BTs myself! Of course - I am assuming that he comes from my side of the country!

Once again thank you to everybody else who has contributed!  ;D

I'll let you guys know if I find anything new ...

Waiting with bated breath for the Probate packet...............

You and I both!

I note that there are a couple of mentions of D HOLBORROW arriving 1839 from (via?) Launceston (Tasmania or Cornwall?) - I assume that's Daniel but can't see anything for John/Isaac.

I believe Tasmania - its mentioned in his obituary that he arrived on the barque Annie Watson and the corresponding passenger manifest suggests Tasmania and not Cornwall - the journey was only 4 days.

Thanks also for those photos/maps of Daniel's shop - I'm always amazed at what information lies out there!

Yes, I had come across this Thomas Maggs alias Holbrow character before but had discounted him as a possible for John Isaac Holborow based on the dates on his death certificate. Although if he was a convict and had "absconded" then perhaps he would've been somewhat economical with the truth ... although for now I am discounting him as a candidate!

Interesting about the lack of possibilities regarding his arrival in NSW - if he wasn't on any of the manifests, does it mean that he may have come from a neighbouring state? I have to confess that I'm somewhat woolly with Australian history off the top of my head and when each statehood was granted - but could he have come overland via Victoria?

Ahh - I have now searched the online indexes (only the Index of Assisted Immigrants is available for the period in question) and can't find a single Holborow/Holbrow/Holborrow/Holborough ...

Thanks for all the effort you guys are extending on this fellow! I really do appreciate it!  ;D Looking forward greatly to receiving the images of the probate packet following Ros' visit on Tuesday! I'll definitely share anything here!
