Berwickshire / Signet, Cockburnspath, Anderson brothers
« on: Monday 16 August 10 11:44 BST (UK)  »
In Miller's History of Dunbar, mention is made of five fishermen who went to the assistance of  "The Signet,  a gun-frigate ..... off Dowe Lawe Point" on 15 10 1818.  Three of the fishermen were brothers, Thomas, John and William Anderson.  From the account it seems the fishermen were in fear of impressment at the time, and the account goes on to state that John Anderson had served with Admiral Parker at the Dogger Bank where he had been wounded, and that William had served in the French war and had also been wounded.

Although I can find some Anderson brothers with the correct names, their ages do not quite tie in with  the dates of these events.

I wonder if anyone has positively identified them, if so I'd be very interested to hear from them.

Hi Alastair

We seem to have common antecedents in William Sneddon and Janet Easton. I'll provide my email address in a personal message if you'd like to share information.

Hi Richard

Mary Trotter's brother Thomas, farmer at Woodhead in Gifford, left a will(1835). There is a mention of Mary in it. It does not shed any light on your dilemma unfortunately.

If you don't have a copy and would like one I could forward you a transcript if you give me an email address.

Regards

James

Hi Elaine

Do you have any mention of Sneddon/en, Snaddon/en in your index.  A Janet Easton married a William Sneddon, coalminer c. 1800, probably Muiravonside , Stirling. They are in the 1841 census for Cranston, but Janet is widowed by 1851.

There is reference on Family Search to the death of Janet Easton, wife of William Sneddon in 1854, "Newton Grange, Newbattle", but no mention of the source of the information.

Thanks

I was interested to see the correspondence re the 42nd. Regiment (Black Watch).
One of my forebears David Morrison is recorded as being a "Musician 42nd. Regiment" in the OPR record for his marriage to Margaret Kerr in Edinburgh 18 Feb 1811.
I assume a visit to Kew would be necessary to try and find more information re his time in the regiment.

Thanks for looking.  My reason for asking was that one of my forebears Jean/Jane Young was born in Spott 1805 to Alexander Young and Anne Downie. I haven't found the marriage of her parents, unless there was forename change - Alexander Young married Margaret Downie 1791, recorded in Spott OPR. There are a few candidates for the parents of this Alexander and a record on a MI might just have helped.
Thanks once again

Hi Tom
No trace of Downie but 2 Young
Alexr YOUNG 27.5.1863 66, da Jane 16.12.1854, w Cath WOOD 10.8.1886..........., also their [da] Christina......
the other mention of YOUNG is a comment by the editors to a stone to Cornelius HOGG
TS Geo JOHNSTON Mert Dunbar d[1].5.1780 57, also Mary TU[RGRIE] his spouse d -.-.1784 42,     Cornelius HOGG, Dunbar, s Wm d 15.1.1838 53  (Ed:  per IGI - possibly Cornelius HOGG md Oldhamstocks 7.1778 to Margt YOUNG)
hope this helps

Hello again Spacot

There is no urgency, but I would be very grateful to you, if when you have the time, it was possible for you to look for the names of Young and Downie in Spott.

Thanks

Tom
