Hello.. Your Grandmother and  my Gran must be cousins as Janet Balfour was my Gran's Aunty.  Our Granmothers Grandparents were William Balfour and Mary Clark who I mentioned in my original post.  My Gran was born and still lives in the house they built in Cluny in 1900 and yes, they were from coal mining backgrounds.. I have managed to build quite a big family tree on Genes Reunited with some photos of them which my Gran looked out for me if you wanted to have a look?  My Email address is (*).  Thanks for getting in touch :)

Fife / Clark, Balfour Babys found in Boat
« on: Saturday 22 November 08 17:32 GMT (UK)  »
My Gran (Agnes Pearson, Cluny 1926) told me a story about an ancestor out fishing with his friend who came across a fishing boat with 2 abandoned babys on it.  They took a baby each and looked after them as their own.  My Gran was told this story by her Mother (Mary Clark Balfour 1895) when she was a girl ages around 10 years old and believes her Mother was told the story at around the same age (in around 1905).  My Gran isn't sure if the ancestor was from her Grandfathers side (William Balfour 1846-1926) or her Grandmother (Mary Clark 1854-1940) but has a feeling it may be on the side of Balfour.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.
