Mark,
As mentioned previously regarding our Boyd family (occ. Tailors)
Did you get a chance to look at the following,at the T&W records office?
For me to request a personal search would cost £30 quid an hour  :'(

ref. Company of Tailors 1536-1973 Gu.Ty

ref. Gu,Ty/36 Enrollment book, 1693-1909 .
     d/o    /37 Roll of members,  1825-1859 .
      d/o   /38 Apprenticechips,   1693-1797 .

mark,
Yes it is a coincidence that George's 3rd wife was also called Jane. She was also  married previously and was formerly Jane Greenwelll Newton.

Mark,
Thanks for ruling that one out.
No doubt there are other deaths of a Jane Boyd that need to be looked at.
In an earlier post I think you mentioned that you were unable to find a Jane Boyd in 1881 cencus that was a suitable match.I could not find one either,so as you say,she had probably died previously.
I also looked for the Jane Boyd who died in the workhouse, who was obviously alive in 1881.
I could not find her either, wonder if you could have a look for her in 1881 as well.
It may just be coincidence that two different Jane Boyd's in the area are not there in 81.Unless they are the same person.
             Cheers Rod...

Mark,
Your  1823 christening does look more likely to be the correct one, rather than the Longbenton one.
I no longer have full access to all the census's,don't know if you do?
So have posted a seperate look up request for the following.
1851 census . Thomas Boyd & wife jane south shields.

  Mark,
Just to add to the above, there is also the following.
Just after Thomas and Jane Chapman married in Feb 1841.they appear living together in South shields,in the 1841 census. This was near where his parents were at the time.
Thomas Boyd born 1820
Jane Boyd born 1822.
Also in 1842 their is a birth of a John Chapman Boyd in Temple town,South Shields.Parents are Thomas Boyd & Jane Boyd.
A possible birth of Jane Chapman is 1821 in Longbenton.
As she is not with Thomas in 1881 census she probably died previously.maybe 1852 in south shields.
But did notice the following death of a Jane Boyd in 1889 just after Thomas & the same year as Mary Ann died. IE..Jane Boyd age 70. The Workhouse,Easington.

mark,
Difficult to prove without sending for certificates. But this looks reasonable.
Deaths.(freebmd)
Death Sep qtr 1888   BOYD    Thomas    67    Easington
Deaths Sep qtr 1889  Boyd    Mary Ann    45    Easington.
This would explain why he was a pauper inmate in 1891 aged 10.
In 1901 census there is also a Mark Boyd (Brickmaker .age given 24.Birthplace UNKNOWN.
This would be reasonable if he was in a home from the age of about 9 years.
If he then wanted to get married,he may well have got in touch with a possible relative who knew who his father was and took the name Armstrong.
At his birth,if he was illigitimate, then his mother may not have wanted to name the father, hence the name given was Mark Chapman boyd after her mothers maiden name.
                 Just an idea, Rod...

Hi Mark,
Yes it does seem unusual. It may be that something on the census is not accurate. But its all we have ,so will be a good puzzle to get to the bottom of.
To start it going,I have just found this entry on free bmd website  ;D
Births Sep 1880

BOYD.    Mark Chapman        Chester le S.    10a   539

This could mean that Mary Ann was a unmarried daughter with a child and not his wife.
                              Rod
Also just found this..
1891 census. Mark Boyd age 10 years. Pauper inmate. Institution/Easington distict.
