Thank you for that link.  I hadn't seen or heard it before. It is does mention where David Hansen, the curator found the information..... a letter to the Times from someone, a jeweller,  who knew him and his family. I will now have to go back through the Times to see if I can find the letter.
Thank you so much for that.

His name and birth are recorded in his convict records as 1802 and cologne but the the curator of the Rodius exhibition stated that he found mention of the name change I think in the London Times.  I have looked in the Times and cannot find anything.  But I would have to trust this man's research as he was an renowned art historian.  He was even writing a book about CR which was not completed when he died.

The Common Room / Charles Rodius name change
« on: Tuesday 23 April 24 04:28 BST (UK)  »
Hi, I wonder can anyone help me.
My GGG grandfather was Charles Rodius who was tried for stealing a lady's purse and transported to Australia.  He became an important artist of the time.  The NSW State Library has now an exhibition of his work including works lent by the British Museum.   I have seen many newspaper articles about his crime & trial, however it has been stated by the curator of the exhibition that he was born Joseph Meyer in Hamburg 1802 and changed his name to Charles Rodius after he came to England.  I cannot contact the curator as he has sadly passed away.  Does anyone know where could I find any information about the name change?
Thanks
Margaret

Can anyone tell me where to find the complete passenger list for the Lord Melville arriving Sydney 1817.  Online there is the list of the  convicts that were on the boat but I cannot find a list of the rest of the passengers.
Thanks

Thank you Kay.
This could be her... but I don't know.  According to the Ancestry records there was a Mary Ann Nichols who died in 1832 approx birth 1752 so if she is the same person she got married very young even accounting for an approximate birthdate.  But they are both the only Mary Nicholls I can find at about the right times and place.
