Unfortunately, none of those fit into my tree - yet! But I've saved them in case any of them crop up at a later date.
Many thanx

Hi, if the offer is still open, could you please have a look for any Greeners or Robsons in your little book?

Many thanx

I have no prior information on Margaret Redford.

I think I may have found her on the IGI:
Margaret Redford
baptised 24/1/1779
All Saints, Newcastle upon Tyne, Northumberland, England

Newcastle isn't 'that' far across the border from Duns (less than 80 miles), but what makes it even more likely that this is her is the name of the father: Burdus Redford!
No mother's name though  :-\

Many thanx for that - very helpful; I've also (having spent half the night puzzling over it) managed to make a bit more sense of the previous postings, so a branch of my tree that's been neglected for ages is suddenly sprouting twigs all over the place  :)

Is anyone researching the family of Margaret Redford and William Gray, baker of Duns. They married in Duns 1802 and the union produced a number of children including Jean (born 1819) , Elizabeth (1814), Dinah, Christian (1812), Burdass (sp?), and Cordelia (born 1822).

Hi, yes I'm researching this couple - as of today in fact, so can't believe that I stumbled across this within hours of identifying Margaret Redford as hubby's 4 x gt grandmother!  I've had Burdass in our tree for quite some time, though with numerous variations on the spelling (e.g. Burdis, Bordis); it seems that at least one boy in each following generation has been given this name, & it's so unusual that it's actually helped me to be sure I'm following the right Gray family  ;)

Today on Scotland’s People I found the baptism of Burduss (that’s how it appears to be spelt there): he was born 5th Jan 1812 & baptised 6th Feb 1812, in Duns.  This led me to the marriage of William Gray & Margaret Redford: 6th April 1802 in Duns.

Now on to what I’ve had in my Ancestry tree for ages – I’ve mainly followed Burdass's son William, as he is hubby’s direct ancestor:

1841 census for Stockton upon Tees:
Burdess (but transcribed as Burdup) Gray, baker, age 26, born Scotland
Jane Gray, age 24
Ann Gray, age 7
William Gray, age 1
In the column for where born, there is an ‘N’ by Jane & Ann.
The next entry on the census sheet is: Betsy Burdis, age 11 - don't know who she is, ut he name is too much of a coincidence for her not to be related!

1851 census for Stockton upon Tees Workhouse (district 2m, p.8):
Burdess Gray, widower age 41, baker, in receipt of Parish Relief
Ann Gray, daughter, age 17, b. Newcastle upon Tyne, also in receipt of parish relief
Margret Gray, daughter, age 6, b. Stockton, scholar

and then, on the 1851 census for Hartlepool (district 10h, p.2) I found:
William Gray, age 11
Burdes Gray, age 8
John Gray, age 2

I found a baptism record on the LDS site, Batch No: C028667 for Margaret Gray (spelt Grey, but the parents tally), & she had a twin, Jane Grey; both baptised 6th June 1845, St Thomas’, Stockton; presumably Jane must have died.

I lost track of Burdess senior after that, but have followed William:
1859 m. Anna Bell Whitfield (I have lots on her too)
1861 census for Winlaton, Co. Durham; 2 children, plus William’s brother Burdes/Bardis living with them.
1871 Linz Green,Tanfield, Co Durham census (surname spelt Grey): 8 children, plus William’s brother John living with them.
1881 Medomsley, Co. Durham census: 11 children
1891 Medomsely census: Anna is a widow, but of the 9 children living with her, the youngest son is 8 years old, & the youngest daughter 3 months old – Anna was 53 by this time, so it would have been stretching it for this to actually be her daughter (perhaps really a granddaughter?), but William had definitely died by 1891.
William & Anna had 13 children altogether; their son Burdis died in the 1903 mining accident at Hamsterley Colliery.

I have a fair amount of information regarding William’s brother Burdes (sp?), plus plenty more details of the Gray family which I’ll happily share with you, but until now had found very little info on the family in earlier times. Interesting as the other posts are, I’m afraid I don’t actually understand them so would appreciate some help.
For instance, what does ‘feur’ mean?  And, how do these people fit in with William Gray and Margaret Redford?

Perhaps I need to read through the posts a few more times, but was so excited that I had to get this reply written asap!

Surrey Lookup Requests / Re: Henry Gasson of Charlwood birth lookup please

Hi David, I have actually made some progress since I posted my original message.  Ann Mitchell was John Gasson's third wife: he married Elizabeth Todman in 1744, & Elizabeth Head in 1769 - at first I thought that I had simply misunderstood the meaning of his will, but eventually pieced together the fact that he was referring to two different Elizabeths (the first of which he apparently did not like, as he left the children of that marriage only one shilling each, whereas those he had with Elizabeth Head got several pounds each!).

I suppose that the Ann Mitchell you found 'could' be the correct one: since she had her last child in 1791 (I found another one, Jinty, also baptized at Charlwood, on the Surrey baptism CD) she certainly couldn't have been born any earlier than around 1740/45, but 1759 would fit better with the age at which a woman might first get married; however, this would mean a massive age difference between she & her husband - at least 30 years bearing in mind that John first married in 1744, & perhaps an even greater difference if the one possiblity I've found for him is correct (John Garston, b. 1715 Charlwood).
I would feel a lot happier about 'your' Ann Mitchell being the correct one if only her father's name had been Edmond, but bearing in mind John's probable age, perhaps this Edmond was Ann's grandfather rather than her father?  I've just been looking at the Worth baptisms on the Sussex fam history grp data archive, where I found Ann Mitchell (baseborn) to mother Ann Mitchell in 1780; so perhaps our Ann was a bit wayward, & her grandfather persuaded his old friend John Gasson to marry her before she brought any more shame on the family?!!

Incidentally, you may be interested to know that I had a fair bit of luck in tracing the fortunes of some others of John & Ann's children: Samuel farmed 119 acres at Lyons Farm, Isflield, & Edward 200 acres at Rowley Farm, Charlwood - the farmhouse is still there, & seems to be sandwiched between an industrial estate & one of the runways at Gatwick Airport!

Anyway, many thanx for going to the trouble of looking that up for me; if you get any further inspiration I'd be glad to hear of it.

Death Duty Registers held at The National Archives (the online index doesn't cover PCC wills) might give you further information.

So of course it was a Canterbury one; but thanx anyway Valda, you've given me some valuable info which I may be able to use in future searches - not that I'm expecting many of my rellies to have written wills, as in a couple of generations the family apparently descended from a farmer with in excess of £500 to bequest, to plain old ag labs  :-\

Many thanx for that Valda.
I've gone cross-eyed transcribing that will (ah well, there was nothing on telly tonight anyway  ;D ); this would indeed seem to be the John Gasson who was married to Ann - probably Ann Mitchell, as one of the executors was an Edmond Mitchell.
Unfortunately it doesn't give me definitive proof that these are the parents of Henry, as only the children of John's first wife, Elizabeth, are named individually. As far as his children with Ann go, it just says 'all children I have and shall have by Ann my now wife'; but, the will was written in 1786, by which time at least the first two (and possibly Henry too) had already been born, so I'd have thought he'd have mentioned them by name too .....

Surrey Lookup Requests / Henry Gasson of Charlwood birth lookup please

Hi, I'm wondering if anybody can help me in tracing the birth/baptism of my 4x great grandfather, Henry Gasson, born in Charlwood c 1785.
I did find a record in the IGI indexes, but it was submitted by a member - & I've learned to my cost not to trust those unless it has accompanying source information, which of course this one didn't.  'If' that record is correct, then Henry's parents were John Gasson & Anne Mitchell, & I'm hoping some kind person can confirm or amend those details for me.

Many thanx in advance
