Travelling People / Re: Link to James(Jemmy)Matthews
« on: Tuesday 22 May 18 07:31 BST (UK)  »
did james matthews have a son named william henry matthews from battle, sussex who married a mary ann holman..if so one of their son's names was richard matthews...who married my great grandmother ella victoria smith from winnipeg...he was a member of the Northwest Mounted Police..

Hi, on my tree I have the following children for James (Jemmy) Matthews and Matilda Matthews (Collins):- Job / Mary Ann / Maria / John / Louisa / Lydia / Phoebe / Eliza / William / Isabella / Matilda.

William I have as born c1874 in Ash, Surrey and died in 1927 & is buried in Farnborough.  I have him with a Nancy Susanna (surname possibly Purry?) so it does not appear to be the William that you are looking for.  Please feel free to contact me if you require any further details.

Hi there Swingboats & dawnsh, many thanks for your replies.

My granddad was William Cothard, brother of Richard - his mother was Elizabeth Castle, Chorley's daughter.  You are right that Elizabeth 'married' Dicky Codard - his real name was Richard Cowthard, his son Richard (Dickie) has Richard Cowthard on his birth certificate, his other son William (Billie) had William Smith on his birth certificate.  From family talk it would appear that Richard Cowthard had run away with the fair and did not want to be found hence why he changed the name.  Both Richard and William, however, were known as Cothard throughout their lives and both died under the name of Cothard.  My granddad Bill died in 2002 aged 100 and is buried at St Botolph's cemetery near Steyning, he lived in Bramber, West Sussex most of his life and often went to fairs and fetes with his swingboats and roundabouts.

Hi there, column 7 states 'the mark of Elizabeth Smith widow of the deceased, Grayswood, Haslemere'  The family were hawkers and travelling showmen so they did not have a fixed address.  The death certificate was signed by William A Ardagh MD.

Hi, can any Rootschatters out there help me please?  My Great Grandfather died on 6th January 1904 in Grayswood in the district of Haslemere, Surrey.  He was born in 1872 under the name of Richard Henry Cowthard.  He then left the family and 'married' Elizabeth Matthews, daughter of Chorley (Charles) Matthews & Phoebe Matthews nee Deakins.  I assume that he did not want his family to find him as he changed his surname to Smith and his death certificate was registered under the name of Smith.

If anybody could find out where he is buried that would be brilliant as I have been looking for over a year now and have not come up with anything - I assume that as he died quite near to Hampshire he could be buried in a Hampshire church.

Any ideas to further my search or any help would be great.  Many thanks.   :D :D :D

Essex Lookup Requests / Re: WILLIAM SEARLES born 1835 Great Leighs, Essex
« on: Saturday 16 July 11 15:14 BST (UK)  »
Hi there, have just received the marriage certificate for William, however, it has a blank where his father's name should be  :o- as I said in my previous post if the people he was living with on the 1841 census were his parents (John & Elizabeth Searles), Elizabeth would have been 44 when she gave birth to him.

In view of this I am now feeling that maybe William was the illegitimate son of maybe one of John & Elizabeth's children who was possibly being brought up by his grandparents?

If anyone has access to the Essex Parish Registers I would be ever so grateful if someone could check the birth/baptism records for Great Leighs to see whether William's parents are listed - I was under the assumption that he was born in 1835, however, his marriage certificate lists him as being 21 when he married in December 1855 so I am more included to believe that he was actually born in 1834.

Many thanks for all your help, especially findem. ;D

Hi Findem,

I've come across Rebecca Gray before, according to the family trees listed in Ancestry she married John Searles (son of Thomas & Sarah Willers) on 7th August 1809 in Felsted Essex. However, I have John's wife listed as Elizabeth as she is listed with John on the 1841 & 1861 census returns - maybe he remarried?.

It is interesting that you also believe that John's parents were Thomas Searles & Sarah Willers as I also have this information - there are many trees on Ancestry with this family, however, only one lists John as a son & the majority list Thomas b.1787 as the first child.  You also mention that they had 10 children, I also agree with you:-

 - John b.1786
 - Thomas b.1787
 - William b.1789
 - Elizabeth b.1791
 - Samuel b.1794
 - Henry b.1797
 - Sarah b.1799
 - Mira b.1801
 - Mary b.1805
 - Phoebe b.1808

Hi Findem, Many thanks for your help - I guess I'll have to get William's marriage certificate (married Colchester 1855) to see whether this lists his parents :D

Hi, can anyone out there be able to check the Parish Registers for Great Leighs for my GGG Grandfather, William Searles.  I have his parents listed as John Searles b1786 and Elizabeth Searles b1791 - he is listed with them on the 1841 census, however, it does not show whether these are his parents.  If the above is correct his mother would have been 44 when she gave birth to him.  If anyone could check the Registers either for birth or Baptism to see whether his parents are listed that would be great.  Many thanks in advance for any help that anyone can give.   :D

Hi Jim1, many thanks for your help - I think I may have to go to the Parish Registers to check his birth & who his parents were listed as.

Once again many thanks :)
