Nairnshire / Finlayson - Nairn - Scotland - 1959-1960
« on: Monday 29 January 24 21:52 GMT (UK)  »
A newspaper article featured a person looking for her former penfriend , surnamed  Finlayson ,
who lived in Nairn in 1959/60.

I have no connection with these folk but the chance sighting of the newspaper report spiked my interest .

Any reader who likes a challenge could get the details  from The Press & Journal 22 January 2024 , in the section 'PAST TIMES'.
The reporter is Susy Macaulay .

Can you help Mariana from Brazil find her mum's Nairn penpal? (pressandjournal.co.uk)

A day ago :
Having seen this newspaper article about Nairn genealogy I passed it on to a person who has the surname CHISHOLM in her family tree.
Within an hour or two , back came this reply :

WOW!!! This is incredible - thank you so so much - I'm going to email Kim and pre order the book. I can't thank you enough for letting me know :)

Essex / Re: Martin Family in Halstead & Ilford , Essex

Thank-you for hanging in .

My  brief was simple , I thought .
I sought  reference to eighteen-year-old Lilian Joyce Martin , who was working as a trainee nurse , at Claybury Mental Hospital ,
in 1939 .
Failing to find such  reference , I branched out to look elsewhere for mention of Lilian Joyce Martin .
From there my quest took on a life of its own , with  several findings including one within  the  1921 Census .
It then became  easy , too easy , to link this person to a family - the wrong family as it turned out .
With no relevant finding in the 1939 Register , the frustration continued . After all , she MUST have been listed in that Register .

So my own factual findings amounted to NIL .

To continue the narrative , based on evolving  family lore , I worked on the following :new suggestions :
Lillian Joyce Martin was born Lily J. Adams , 23 August 1921 .
Her parents were Albert Edward Adams  and Margaret Adams born Margaret  Rawlings
Albert Edward Adams allegedly abandoned his wife and family within a year or two of  his daughter's birth .
At some point Lily  was taken in by  her aunt , Louisa Martin .. The adoption was formalised in December 1930 .
Lily  became known as Lililian Joyce Martin .

I have no documentation .

My thanks go  to all readers and helpers , along with my apologies for  sending you on  a wild-goose chase ..

I was 'all at sea'   with the information I was being fed .
I accepted it in good faith , more fool me .
Now , I have to eat humble pie and apologise for a change of tack .
If readers/ helpers wish to opt out I fully understand .....

The parents of Lily Joyce Adams (who  became Lily Joyce  Martin in 1932 by adoption ) b. 1921 were :
Albert Edward Adams , who MAY have been born in 1896
Margaret Rawlings      , who MAY have been born in 1902
the couple married  2 June 1920  at West Ham , Essex , England.     4A  837

I am now  wondering whether Lilian Joyce Martin
is not 'available' to view on the 1939 Register , thanks to the 100-year rule.
Usually , proof of death or age would 'release' names from remaining in a closed record . In this case , no death record would be available in England because , Lilian was supposed to have married in England , then emigrated to Canada..

Carole W. made the point that she should be in the 1939 Register .
So perhaps she is there , but hidden from view  ?
