Technical Help / Re: Blue screen
« on: Sunday 27 September 09 14:56 BST (UK)  »
There are a few reasons what this blue screen comes up ... some of it depends on what Operating System you are using.  Can you let us know?

Generally, this means that there is some flaw in the hardware of your computer ... memory, hard drive, video memory ...

If you have not lost anything, I would be more inclined to believe it is a memory flaw.

It would be good to get someone to check this out and get it fixed before it does affect something.

Johngirl,

That's the first I've heard ... just went and checked it with several browsers and it seems to be running fine.

http://www.podcastgenealogy.com

... checked the links (this one and above) as well.

IE ran with it ... Chrome and Mozilla did seem to run a bit slow for some reason, but about the 3rd refresh, they popped in.

Not sure what to tell you ... I am on a VERY RELIABLE hosting service using the latest version of Joomla ...

Thanks for letting me know ... I'll see if I can track down what is making the two browsers a bit slower.

Technical Help / Re: Laptop trouble please help.
« on: Saturday 26 September 09 00:43 BST (UK)  »
I ran into this on my niece's computer and it can be particularly nasty.

The options are pretty simple ... try the F8 already listed and have it try a Repair.  If this still doesn't work and the black screen continues (in her case safe mode made no difference) ... find someone that knows how to connect the drive into another machine to pull any data you want to save ...

Because the only option at this point would be to reload the OS ... generally, this can be done as one of the F8 | Repair Options ...

Let me know ...

Technical Help / Re: How to delete a tree from FTM 2005
« on: Friday 25 September 09 22:09 BST (UK)  »
Basically, it looks like there are two possibilities.

1. That you merged the GEDCOM into your tree ... as said above, we hope you have a pre-merge copy.

2. That you've opened the GEDCOM and the software is defaulting to that one each time you start the FTM.

It's been too long since I worked with 2005 ... but the simple route would be to locate your original Family Tree file and double-click it which should open FTM with that tree and when you close the software, use File Close instead of the Red X at the top right and it should default to opening the one you double-clicked.

Good luck ...

Technical Help / Re: Can I create a PDF file for a diary?
« on: Friday 25 September 09 13:21 BST (UK)  »
Jackie,

If you are using one of the print drivers to convert to PDF (I use one called CutePDF Printer) ... you can use ANY application that will print.

You could just as easily use PowerPoint or Publisher to combine it into one large document prior to printing.

This is the original scan without any changes made ... I scanned and loaded it directly.
