Also try the local Family History society.  They'll have burial records for the area.

The Lighter Side / Re: Transportation

You might find her listed on the prison ships to Australia.  The Australian records are brilliant.  Many children were transported too which was actually a blessing.  While in England they most likely did not receive an education.  In Australia, all transported children were educated and taught a trade which they wouldn't be if they'd remained in England.

Sometimes a slip is made when people are dealing with a death and particularly if it's a sudden, unexpected death.  When our son died we got together something to put into the obituary page and totally missed his paternal grandparents' names.  Just a slip but we were totally shocked and grieving and hopefully people would realise it wasn't intentional.  We would have been mortified if we weren't dealing with something so much worse in our lives.

I'm happy to be an "it" but my preferred pronouns are "idgat" and "idgaf".  Itgat is "I don't give a toss" and idgaf is ... something similar.

I just dropped into this site after a long absence and happened upon your query.  Penicuik is spelled "Penicuik".  Not sure if that information will be much use to you since people will know exactly what you mean when you add "Midlothian".  The graveyard in Penicuik is very well maintained.  The local Family History Society will most likely have graveyard inscriptions that you could ask them about.

West Lothian (Linlithgowshire) / Re: Bo'ness Churchyard

I'm thinking Bo'ness Old Churchyard is the one that was divided into Upper and Lower when The Wynd was created to join the lower town centre to the land on higher ground, and The Wynd runs through the centre of the graveyard.

Armed Forces / Re: Chelsea Pensioner 1851 - can I track his service?

Something to remember - in the 18th and 19th centuries people often didn't know how old they were. On joining the army, the army would think they looked a certain age and give them that age plus the day they enlisted as their birthday. And then when you find them in the Census records people lied about their age.  If you visit The National Archives at Kew you can view the Muster Rolls for his regiment during the time he served but it's very time consuming.

Maybe a good idea to have an entry for a fictional ancestor on your tree with impossible B M & D information.  Then you'll know if somebody copies it.

Hi MummyG

I had a look at your drop-box and I’ve got some information for Robert Bridden, if, indeed, it’s the same person!

Private 1693 Robert Bridden was a recruit arrived at Karachi from England on 16 April 1842.  The regiment had set off towards Kabul leaving the sick who were holed up in the Citadel surrounded by rebel forces and Robert would have helped to protect them.  He set off with the recruits to catch up with the regiment in December 1842.  He took part in the battle at Maharajpur in December 1843. He was promoted to Corporal sometime between July and September 1844.

Cheers
