Vabre,

The Freeman's Journal that I refer to in my post is available online at the National Library of Australia, (Canberra) - not the State Library of New South Wales, (Sydney).

You are able to apply for a readers card on the link previously provided.

Cheers,

Janet.

Hi Vabre,

As you give your location as Sydney, Australia you are able to apply for a National Library of Australia card which will enable you to research numerous Irish newspapers online, one of which is the Freeman's Journal.

Hi Holly2,

Welcome to Rootschat.

It does not appear that Harkel25 has not been online since 12 June, so they may well be on holidays!  I hope very much that you get a reply soon.

Cheers,

Janet.

bainin,

In answer to your question in PM.

The Freeman's Journal was founded in 1763, and was the oldest nationalist newspaper in Ireland.  The Freeman's Journal ceased publication in 1924 when it merged with the Irish Independent.

Cheers,

Janet.

Hi bainin,

Please check you PM as I have sent you snippet from the "Freemans Journal" dated, Tuesday, July 01, 1879.  Every little bit helps!

Appears that your man passed about 1879.

Cheers,

Janet.

Hi dancing lady,

Have a read thru the following links:

My Ancestor came from Ireland - where do I start?

Depending on what State of Australia your man settled in you may need to purchase the relevant death or marriage certificate/transcript for him, bearing in mind that information on certificates/transcript is as only good as the knowledge of the informant.

Information on Australian Certificates (All States):
http://www.jaunay.com/bdm.html

May also be useful to search thru the Australian newspapers and there may be information in his obituary or death notices as to his origins.

Janet.
