Lanarkshire / Weir or De Vere of Blackwood and Weir of Cathcart
« on: Friday 25 June 21 15:45 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone have information which would allow me to link the Weirs of Blackwood with the Weirs of Cathcart (Weir Pumps fame) and if there is a clear genetic link between the Lanarkshire Weirs?

As a matter of curiosity, what exactly are these dubious 'sources'? If any of them are in any way correct, they should say where the information came from, so that you can follow it back to a primary source (original contemporary document).

Sites showing the parentage errors are MyHeritage, Ancestry and FamilySearch all of which contain spurious data in this subject (and many, many more I suspect). You are correct - don't trust the internet it is littered with nonsense and conjecture.  ???

The information which provides the erroneous parentage is widespread throughout the Genealogy web sites, which of course does not make it correct. Yes, the information concerning parentage is clearly incorrect but one of the individuals is probably correct.

The names Agathe Ogilvie and Agathe Ramsay appear interchangeable and data is more or less  the same throughout. The Ogilvy connection also appears within the Ramsay data and Margory Ogilvie is Agathe's grandmother.

I will keep trying - thanks for your help.

I am researching my Family Tree which includes connections to the Ramsay family; in particular the Ramsays of Auchterhouse in Angus.

Several sources of information points to the husband and wife having the same parents!
Does anyone have information which will confirm or otherwise their parenthood.

Sir Malcolm Ramsay 1325 – 1365 (Hereditary Sheriff of Forfar) married Agathe Ramsay of Auchterhouse (born Ogilvy) 1329 – 1365

They both are reported to have the same parents i.e. Henry Ramsay 1300 – 1341 and Ella Ramsay (born House) 1302 – 1338

Any help in tracking down the correct parentage would be appreciated.

Hi Neil,

I'm descended from Henry & Jemima and their daughter Jessie - Henry's second marriage to Jane Ogilvy was childless as they were too old when they married in 1869.

According to the Police museum, he was at that time, the longest serving officer in Dundee up to his retiral shortly before his death in 1892. I have a photo of him in his later years in uniform. Jemima presents a tragic figure with the death of her mother when she was quite young and the death of several of her children, culminating in her suicide in 1869 (I suspect his marriage to Jane Ogilvy in the same year was due to necessity as Henry still had a few young children to look after!)

The marriage of Christina Lawson in 1869 to Henry Ferguson Jnr (Henry & Jemima's son) when Henry Jnr was 23 is coincidental, as it is the same year his mother died and his father married Jane Ogilvie.

Makes interesting reading - see attached image.

Graham

Hi Neil,

I have a fair amount of info on Henry and Jemima which also includes his second wife Jane Ogilvie.

Not a lot about Henry Jnr (my connection is through their daughter Janet/Jessie) but most of the info is for Henry Snr from his early days as a Police Officer to his death in 1892.

Let me know what you have an I may be able to fill in a few gaps

To the right of the Picture house you can just make out a small structure -- this was a small wooden weatherboard building (about the size of a garage) and was a shop owned by a huge lady who had to sit down most of the time -- she used a long stick with a grab that reached almost all the shelves.
About 70 metres to the right (east) of the Picture House is the local Catholic Church (the Chapel) and it is still

The large lady referred to was Maggie McFalls and she sat in the same position for years! The cinema was not only called the "Flea-Pit" it was known as "The Buggy" for obvious reasons.

The Deluxe Cinema is now demolished (as of summer 2010) and there is a You-tube video clip of its demise. Search You-Tube for "Denny Bingo demolition.......after fire. Numbers up!!"

Hi Pam,

I can only find the marriage cert for William Weir and Charlotte Ross. William was a shoemaker and they were married in Dalkeith on 8th Aug 1851 but no reference at that time to parentage.

John Mitchell Purvis (39) Farm Servant married Jane Campbell Weir (19) Domestic Servant on 14th March 1908 at Gateside Linlithgow. John's father was James Purvis and mother Jane Purvis MS Mitchell. Jane's father was Samuel Weir (Town Officer) and mother Janet Weir MS Fleming. The parties appeared to have failed to register the marriage within the prescribed period and the entry was completed under warrant of the Sheriff on 13th Oct 1910 - Blythswood District Glasgow.

Hope this helps.

Hi Pam, I'm delighted to hear from you and it seems we share close ancestry via the Weir line.

I would be delighted to share any information I have on the Weirs' up to present day if you wish, and equally any information to corroborate my searches etc would be most welcome.

On the subject of Duncan Weir - it seems we have differing information relating to David's father!

I have a copy of David Weir's death cert on 26 June 1911 which shows his wife as Ann Laing and his father as Duncan Weir and mother Mary Dimmock (Dymock) the Informant was David's son James. There is no mention of David's father being James.

The only real answer would be the the Informant got the info wrong (not uncommon) or Duncan was also known as James?

It looks like I have a fair amount of back-checking to do. But anyway, many thanks for your assistance and I hope we can share more info soon. You can let me know your email address throught the PM system.

Regards
Graham
