Kerry / Re: Bridget Murphy Langford
« on: Monday 19 December 11 19:21 GMT (UK)  »
Shane,

Thank you for your kind response. Thank you too for the other name Kiltilla for the Keel, Castlemaine area. I didn't know of this name for the Keel area. I've been collecting William and Catherine Murphys both in this country and Ireland in hopes of finding Catherine's maiden name. My next plan in this endless search for my Bridget Murphy Langford is to begin posting on rootschat information on her Irish neighbors and friends in her US village. Possibly this will help others and maybe lead me to my Murphys roots. Kieran(Kerry) Sullivan was from Kerry and a close friend and neighbor of my Bridget. I found him and his Kerry family on the Irish genealogy site.

Many thanks,
Sue

Kerry / Bridget Murphy Langford

William Langford of Keel Parish was my grt grt and in the 1850s married Bridget Murphy, always known as Bridget but perhaps baptized as Mary, probably born in the 1830s, birthplace recorded as Republic of Ireland. Her parents were recorded as William and Catherine Murphy. Her birth is recorded as February 2nd on her NY death cert., the birth year is unclear but likely in the 1830s. Her birth and marriage could not be found in the Dublin Library's Keel Parish records or on the Irish Genealogy site. Her only known sibling, Margaret Murphy, married a Michael Mahoney who was possibly the son of John and Margaret Cournane Mahoney of Keel Parish.(marriage in US) Margaret's 1925 NY death cert. records November 3, 1841 as her birth date in the Republic of Ireland. Are there any suggestions regarding a continued search for my Murphys in County Kerry. Thank you.

Dublin / Re: William Carroll Lord Mayor of Dublin (1819-1890)
« on: Thursday 02 December 10 06:39 GMT (UK)  »
Quaxer, Shane, hanes teulu,

Thank you to each of you!

Quaxer, The Fitzwilliam St address was helpful but especially interesting because now I realize how this street has been so much of Dublin's history.

Shane, The additional William Carroll information you sent is very welcome because it provides more names to explore regarding the history of Dublin.

hanes teulu, Yes this was my family's priest, Rev. James Hourigan, who is recorded in the Freeman's Journal as donating to the fund for establishing the Catholic University of Ireland in 1853. You've provided me with another interesting research path to follow, the establishment of this university and its history and the Freeman's Journal as a source.

Sincerely,
Dana

Galway / Re: Murphy from Loughrea
« on: Tuesday 30 November 10 21:28 GMT (UK)  »
Cappy,

I found a possibility for one of my Murphy's yesterday on the Boston Pilot site placed by a Michael Murphy from Loughrea Galway in 1862. He was looking for his sister, a Bridget Murphy from this parish, giving 1858 as the time for her arrival in Binghamton, NY. This was my grt grt grandmother's destination time period for her arrival in Binghamton. Fortunately out of the 2 or 3 Bridget Murphys she is the only one in this  entire NY county who fits this time period. I know her father's name was William and her mother's name Catherine. I don't know the maiden name. This Boston Pilot posting also names a brother Patrick Murphy in Binghamton, NY. My Bridget Murphy was born about 1838. She had a sister Margaret born about 1840. The name Winifred is not familiar but the parents names of William and Catherine combined with the Boston Pilot posting regarding Loughrea caught my attention. My Murphys have been a struggle to find so I'd appreciate anything more you can tell me about your Murphys of Loughrea. Thank you.

Dublin / Re: William Carroll Lord Mayor of Dublin (1819-1890)

Quaxer,

Thank you for your response and mentioning the Irish Times Archives as your source. I had not thought of this as a source and look forward to adding this to my research. Although my humble Irish ancestors had a very indirect connection to this William Carroll he caught my attention because he had held the Dublin office first held by Daniel O'Connell and this made an impression on me knowing that he was a cousin of the priest who cared for 3 generations of my grandmother's family. Thank you for the time you took to find this additional information about him.

Dublin / William Carroll Lord Mayor of Dublin (1819-1890)
« on: Saturday 27 November 10 22:55 GMT (UK)  »
Does anyone know if there is a biography of him online? I have found the Dublin marriages of his daughters on the Irish Genealogy site and a brief mention of his 1890 death in Dublin. The news item of his death was dated Dec. 6,1890 stating he had died "last week". I'd like to know more about him, who he married, where he was born etc., his family background more than his political. His 3 daughters were married at St Andrews Church but I couldn't identify any marriage record for him. He lived on Fitzwilliam Street in the 1860s until his death in 1890 and was the Lord Mayor in the mid 1860s. He interests me because he was a cousin of the priest who was my grandmother's family priest for many years in New York. He was Rev. James Hourigan from Tipperary. He lived with William Carroll for a few weeks in 1841 in Dublin before leaving for New York. If I can't access a biography online what might my other sources be? Thank you.

Tipperary / Re: Rev. Nicholas Hourigan Silver St. Nenagh
« on: Saturday 27 November 10 04:21 GMT (UK)  »
Shane and annclare,

Yes, Rev. Nicholas Hourigan was in Killaloe Parish in Shinrone! This parish seems closely connected to North Tipperary because in addition to Shinrone the 1838 Catholic Directory also lists parish priests from Nenagh and Roscrea. He was appointed to a church in Birr, County Offaly in 1825 which also is in the Killaloe Parish which also is a part of County Tipperary. He was, based on this, probably born about 1800 and so far I haven't found any baptisms for North County Tipperary during this time. I hope I have my thinking cap on straight with all this. Again and again..........many many thanks!

Shane and annclare,

Thank you for the time taken to search and suggest possibilities. I'll definitely follow up on  Killoloe Parish and the Slater records or newspaper items. I never considered the possibility of his priesthood being outside the Nenagh area. These Slater news items appear to be a gem for anyone researching Nenagh or perhaps other areas. I apologize if I have misspelled the parish name. It' new to me and I didn't take note of the spelling before writing this. Many many thanks!

Tipperary / Re: Rev. Nicholas Hourigan Silver St. Nenagh

Shane,

You are so very kind to take time to help. Rev. Nicholas Hourigan's brother, Rev. James Francis Hourigan, son of Thomas Hourigan, was "born January 11, 1815 in Nenagh, County Tipperary" and ordained  before he left Ireland in 1841. "He left his home in Nenagh May 6th, 1841 to take passage to America". My source is again the New York biography. THANK YOU!!
