Thanks for the information and the link to the picture of the Greyfriars Inn.

I got a picture of the building when it was still the "Live and Let Live" pub from the County Records office when I was there four years ago.

Interestingly the signs on the building advertise Beds rather than beer.

Hi John,

All we know is the family came to Bedford from Whittlesey (Cambs). In March 1899 it is recorded in the Bedford Workhouse register that the family came to the Workhouse from the Live & Let Live Public House in 22 All Hallows Lane , Bedford. Mary Ann entered the Workhouse on 10th March 1899 due to her husband deserting her and the children. Thirteen days later Mary Ann died. We got this information from the Bedford archives 3-4 years ago during a visit to Bedford.

>>>There's a FreeBMD death index if Mary Ann Hill in Bedford RD vol 3b page 216 in Mar qtr 1899, aged 28 .... that's most likely her...<<< Yes that's the one and we have ordered the certificate and are currently waiting for it to arrive.

Thanks again for your help.

Hello John,

No I did not get a chance to call the County Hall and I would be very grateful if you could see if you can find out anything during one of your visits.

My Great Grandmothers name was Mary Ann Hill (nee Robertson) and she was born in Whittlesey Cambridgeshire in about 1870. I know she died in the Bedford Workhouse thirteen days after entering in 1898. She left 4 children all of whom I know were sent out as borders to local family's, Two girls to Wilshamstead and two boys to Kempston. My main interest is to know where she was buried and if it is possible to locate the grave, which I assume would be unmarked.

I very much appreciate your offer of help.

Thank you all for your help, and thank you Bilge for the link which I will check out tomoprrow. As I live in Stockport I will call the Bedford County Hall on Monday to see if they can help. I suspect as my Great Grandmother died in the workhouse in 1900 she will have been buried in a paupers grave in the old cemetery.

Any help will be appreciated.

England / Isaac Hill
« on: Friday 04 December 09 21:52 GMT (UK)  »
Hello, I was wondering if anyone could help me find out what happened to my Great Grandfather Isaac Hill. Isaac was born in 1866 in Whittlesey Cambridgeshire and married Mary Ann Robertson on Christmas  Eve in 1890. I know that in 1894 Susan one of their children was born in the Union workhouse in Cambridgeshire. I then find them in Bedford living in the "Live and Let Live" public house, which I am told was a doss house. I then find that in 1899 Mary Ann and her four children went into the Bedford Workhouse where she died after just 13 days. The four children were sent out as borders to families in the Kempston and Wilstead area. The Bedford prison records show that Isaac was sent to prison for 14 days in March 1900 for neglecting his family. After this we lose track of him. My grandmother Alice was one of the children sent to Wilstead as a border. I know from her marriage certificate dated in 1918 that Isaac Hill was deceased. Another thing we found out from the Bedford Prison records was that he had been imprisoned  previously in Cambridge but it does not say for how long or for what.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Hi again,

I would be happy to take some pictures for you, but it will most probably be March/April time before I go again. However I do travel south quite a bit on business so please send me the location details and I will take the photos for you at the earliest opportunity.

Hi Margaret, I think as this is my third posting I am now allowed to send personal messages. I don't quite know what this involves but hopefully it will let me send you the AVI's and the photographs electronically. Lets see what happens after I send this reply. I won't be able to sort out the material to send you until next week as I am going away this weekend.

Hello John & Cupcake,

John, thank you for your offer of help. I moved to Stockport from Bedford some 30 years ago and although I did a lot of family history research at the Bedford County Hall in the late 80's early 90's then nothing more until a few weeks ago.

Cupcake, I have a lot of information on Charles Kidman as my parents were very close to Charles and Dorothy (Know as Glady's). I can remember the many visits to his bungalow in Biggleswade where he owned and ran a Garage, plus he had a large Nursery with a shop just down the road.
Charles was quite a character who being a farmer always said if he was ill he would rather trust a vet than a doctor and I have seen him use eye ointment that was meant for a cow. During his later years he stood for election as a councillor for Biggleswade but failed to get elected. If you are interested I can send you some photographs and the AVI file of the home movies I have of Charles. You will have to let me know the best way to get these to you? I usually go back to Bedford a couple of times a year and know the Biggleswade area quite well, so if there is anything you would like help with such as taking some photographs, etc, I would be pleased to help.

Regards David (DAW52)
