The Common Room / "The Downs" and Hong Kong marriage - help please!
« on: Tuesday 14 December 04 07:04 GMT (UK)  »
I'm sure Rootschatters will be able to help me!

1.  My g-grandparents came to Australia in 1868.  Their ship, the Landsborough, left from the Downs in 1867.  What/where is that, please?  I gather from the rest of the info that it is in London.

2.  Is there anywhere on the Net that I can find an index that will give me a marriage in Hong Kong, I think in the 1870s, between two British nationals?  He was a sea captain and she went from England to Hong Kong to marry him.

Thanks!

The Common Room / Possible link to Captain James Cook, seaman extraordinaire
« on: Saturday 27 November 04 10:43 GMT (UK)  »
My mother always said that her family had a link to Captain Cook, seaman, navigator and discoverer of the east coast of Australia.  She acknowledged that it may not be direct descent since as far as we knew he had no children who survived to adulthood and married.

I have found that my g-g-grandfather, George William Bentley, married Ellen (or Eleanor) Cook on 11/10/1835 at St Olave, Hart St, London.  This is intriguing, but I haven't been able to trace her further back.  I don't know whether she was born in London or Yorkshire.  I am wondering if she may be a grand-daughter of Captain Cook's brother.

Does any Rootschatter know anything about the family of this great historical figure?

Ireland / Advice please - new to searching in Ireland
« on: Friday 12 November 04 08:38 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Rootschatters

I've been searching industriously in England, and am now wanting to venture into another part of the family in Ireland.  If anyone can advise this Aussie, I'll be very grateful!  I have read that Irish censuses largely don't exist for the 19th century.

I am looking for siblings of my g-grandfather, Edmund Huband Smith (later hyphenated).  He was born 1837, apparently in Co Tyrone, though his father, Joseph Huband Smith, was a Dubliner.  As a young man, Joseph lived at 1 Fitzwilliam St North, Dublin.  He married Catherine Cecilia Jephson in 1835 and then seemed to have lived at 2 Holles St, Dublin - he was a barrister.

There may have been a family connection to the church of St Nicholas Without in Dublin.

We think one sibling may have been called Jephson Huband Smith and possibly another Josephine Huband Smith, but do not know for sure.

I would also like to find out death details for Joseph (who we believe died c. 1882) and his wife Catherine.

Can anyone point me in the right direction to find this information, please?  It is hard, from this side of the world!

Probably not as well qualified as Amy, but I am fairly fluent in French and could translate documents for people.  Happy to assist if needed!

The Common Room / Two general questions - help, please
« on: Sunday 03 October 04 06:54 BST (UK)  »
Dear Rootschatters

Someone in England may know the answers to these two questions - would be delighted with any information!

1.  My great-great-grandparents were married by licence at the Parish Church of St Marylebone in 1838.  This was a devout Anglican family and became quite Anglo-Catholic - their son was a Church of England priest.  I am wondering what might be possible reasons for marrying by licence rather than having the banns read?

2.  While visiting England briefly in June (I live in Australia), I tracked down the grave of the priest referred to above, in Wolvercote Cemetery in Oxford.  On the grave was a decaying wooden memorial, a wooden cross with a sort of "roof", two pieces of wood going from the top of the cross to the ends of the arms, giving it a shrine-like appearance.  I asked several people in Oxford, including the church office, about this, without success.  Does anyone know what it means?

Thanks a lot,

Marie

Completed Census Requests / Lookup 1901 Census - Martin
« on: Saturday 02 October 04 12:46 BST (UK)  »
I'd love it if you could look up Rev. William Lockwood Martin in the 1901 census and tell me what the entry is and details of who was in his household.  According to my information, he should have been at the Vicarage, Berriew, Montgomeryshire, at that time.

Thanks, a million, in advance!

Australia / Emigrants to NSW - Huband-Smiths
« on: Tuesday 28 September 04 05:45 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I am looking for my great-grandparents, Edmund and Caroline Huband-Smith, who arrived in NSW from England in late 1867 or early 1868.  I do not know the ship.  They do not seem to have been assisted immigrants and so far I am unable to find them.  Any help would be very much appreciated!

London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / Martin family - 1861 London census
« on: Thursday 16 September 04 08:55 BST (UK)  »
At the 1851 census, Edward and Mary Ann Martin (nee Lockwood) were living at 2 North Place Marylebone, and had three children - Mary, Caroline and William Lockwood.  They do not appear to have been there in 1861 (I got a brief look at the census).  Edward was possibly dead by then but I do not know that for sure.

When my g-grandmother Caroline was married in 1867, the address was 9 Rose St., Soho.

If anyone can find them in the 1861 London census, this Australian will be deeply grateful!
