Down / Robert Flanagan b 1768 Newry Public Enemy No. 1!
« on: Thursday 19 August 10 13:46 BST (UK)  »
This rascal- my ancestor :o- was tried in 1791 & transported to Australia in 1793.

His offence was highway robbery but i'm fascinated to learn that he was prosecuted by a  public subscription raised in Newry, and that 5 "Gentlemen of Newry" wrote to the authorities requesting that his sentence not be commuted, unless it be to transportation for life.

He was constantly in & out of Downpatrick prison...and "a villain and a robber" to boot.

In NSW he married & had 2 daughters, but seems to have disappeared without trace, possibly having attempted to escape....

I wonder if there is a collection of tales about Irish/ Co. Down convict transportees, or if anyone has any recollection of hearing about this reprobate? Any rellies still around? Anyone?

Kerry / James Hennessy from Galey to Australia, Jan 1861
« on: Wednesday 11 August 10 11:45 BST (UK)  »
Hello All,

James's NSW 1907 death cert. gives his birthplace as Co. Kerry, & his parents as James Hennessy & Mary, nee [unknown] :P
My sums & the (emigrant ship) passenger listed age both indicate 1837ish as his birthdate. The same list gives Gale (sic) as his birthplace. I know nothing else of his life pre arrival in Australia, where he farmed in the Hunter River region, at Hexham. He married Jane [nee Nally], daughter of John Nally & Catherine [nee Dogherty]  in 1870, and  they had 8 chn- Mary Ann, John Michael, Catherine Elizabeth, Margaret Ellen, Patrick James*, Honora Jane, & 2 more (names unknown) daughters* (*died in infancy). Any bells?
I don't know when his parents died, or whether he maintained contact with them or other Kerry connections - any sugg. as to relevant parish or other records to track down gratefully accepted...Galey seems rather vague... :-\

Northumberland Lookup Requests / Jane Baguley, Wilhelm & Adelhist Kuss-Westgate 1871
« on: Tuesday 10 August 10 14:49 BST (UK)  »
Hello to all!

My maternal grandmother very often wore a very unusual brooch which she'd inherited from her (Newcastle born) mother, Jane Baguley/Bagulay Bell (m William Burcham 1872)

Grandma said that Jane had been presented with it by her employer, a jeweller, to thank her for nursing his wife devotedly during her pregnancy.

Recently I managed to discover that Jane was employed as a servant in the household of Wilhelm Kuss, a jeweller,  his wife Adelhist (sp? possibly Adelheid) & their 2 month old daughter, Wilhelmina, at the time of the 1871 census.

Their address was 18 Dawson St, Westgate.

Jane & William migrated to South Australia, abt 6 years later, but I've had no luck in finding any further trace of the Kuss family and I'd like to know what became of them.

Can anybody help, please?

Donegal / Devir/Dever/Diver Donegal to Australia 1850s-1870s
« on: Saturday 31 July 10 09:43 BST (UK)  »
My mother's paternal grandfather, John Devir/Dever/Diver- (a different spelling on every occasion!!)- emigrated to Australia with his wife Bridget [O'Donnell] aboard the "Scottish Hero" departing 14.12.1878 from London & arriving 5.4.1879 in Maryborough Queensland. I have no record of them before this.

Bridget had 5 children in Australia: Mary, born/died 1881, Catherine born/died 1882, John Patrick, (my mother's father) b 1883, Catherine born/died 1884, and Bernard (born 1885). Bridget died in 1885, aged 25, possibly from a complication of childbirth. Her death certificate is sketchy, with marriage particulars and parents names & occupation(s) unknown. Birthplace is given as Ireland, and we always assumed it was Donegal. Her death notice in the Sydney Morning Herald requests Londonderry papers to copy. Puzzlingly, it also states she leaves "an affectionate husband & 3 children" Did they leave a child behind in Ireland as my mother seemed to think. There is no further record of the last child Bernard, except for his birth...

John was born abt 1855. He had 2 brothers,

1. Bernard born abt 1839 in Donegal to Thomas Devir, farmer, & Catherine Sweeney, (according to his death certificate) and
2. Michael born abt 1837 in Donegal to James Devir, farm labourer, & Catherine Sweeney, (according to his death cert.) Was this a clerical error? or was Catherine widowed and remarried to another Devir?
Michael and his wife Sarah [Ryan] emigrated to Aus in abt 1865, but I've found no shipping record for them. I found a marriage record for a Michael Diver & Sarah Ryan, both of Cloghroe in 1864. His father's name is given as James
I have discovered several James & Thomas Devir/Dever/Divers in Conwal (Letterkenny); Tullaghobegly (Maheragallan); Killybegs (Drumbarran)and Kimacrenan (Gortnaskeagh) but I am anxious not to leap to erroneous conclusions.
Bernard's obit in the Sydney Morning Herald 1886- he died 24 Jan after 17 yrs in Aus.- stated that he was formerly of Kilmacrenan. He married, in Sydney in 1876, Catherine Leggatt [nee Devir], who had emigrated with her sister Sophia Devir in 1859 aboard "Lady Bruce". Their brother Dominick (sic) & sister Bridget joined them in 1864. Sophia Devir married Cornelius Devir, a fellow passenger on the "Lady Bruce" (presumably in Sydney, as they each appear as single on the passenger list).
All these Devirs marrying Devirs gets very confusing!  ???

Back to my gtgrfather John.  He seems to have fallen of the face of the earth. We know he went gold mining, dragging my gfather (who eventually ran away back to Sydney) with him. He was an alcoholic by that time, small wonder. There is no further record of him. But that's for the Aus forum.

Any leads on their pre Australia lives, and connections, would be much appreciated.

Lanarkshire / Christies in Killin
« on: Wednesday 28 July 10 15:47 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

My ggg/grmother, Janet Christie, emigrated to Australia in July 1841 aboard the Herald. The passenger list states her age as 22 on the 19th May, 1841. Her parents were John Christie, (occupation Criminal Officer), and Janet (nee Stewart), residing in High Street, Glasgow.

I couldn't find them on the 1841 census, but on the 1851 census a John Christie 59, Detective Efficer (sic) Police, is at 15 Nicholas Street, Glasgow (St Paul). No mention of his wife, Janet, but there are his niece, Ellison Swan, abt 20, a dressmaker, and Janet Orr, abt 12, who is his grt gdaughter residing in the household as well. According to the census entry John was born in Dumbarton, Perthshire abt 1792.

The only marriage of a John Christie to a Janet Stewart/Stuart I can find is on 16.6.1811 in Killin, Perth.
On the 19th May, 1816 a daughter of a John Christie & a Janet Stewart is born in Killin, Perth (this entry appears with a 29th May date as well, poss. a christening?)

SO what is my problem??

A Janet Christie of this birthplace & year appears in the 1851 census, farming in Perthshire.
Which Janet is this?

My ggg/grandmother was reported, in the obits of a rural Australian newspaper at the time, as having died, following the birth of her 3rd child, on a remote property in NSW in 1848. (Her husband remarried in 1851). There is no apparent official record of her death or burial in any variant of her fore- & sur-names, maiden or marital.

Did she return to Scotland? Or are these Killin folk leading me up the garden path?
In pitiful anticipation and with gratitude

Ann in Sydney
